Chemical Hygiene Officer

Come join UCI’s Research Safety Services Team! Our Research Safety Services unit provides coordination and support related to EHS regulatory program compliance, loss control, incident management, chemical product evaluation, PPE selection and distribution, regulatory agency support and citation management, and equipment approval for field and laboratory-based research efforts. We develop and implement comprehensive research safety programs in accordance with Federal, State, and local regulations. We strive to provide reliable, innovative, and proactive services to our campus community. Our goal is to integrate safety into the culture of our community while supporting academic and research excellence. The result is a safe and healthy environment with appropriate compliance, protection of assets and efficient execution of business processes.

We are looking for:
A Chemical Hygiene Officer who will serve as the technical expert in the development/implementation of programs within Laboratory Safety including Chemical Safety, Hazardous Materials, and Hazardous Waste. This individual may represent EH&S at meetings and conferences involving academic compliance committees, campus, system wide, local government, state, and federal levels of authority in matters related to field of expertise. The position will create new methodologies by applying professional EH&S knowledge and/or expertise to address complex problems and will have general responsibility for the campus chemical hygiene plan.  The individual will work closely with the academic EH&S School Coordinators, and provide subject matter expertise in the areas of chemical safety, risk evaluation, and high hazard chemical research facilities.

The Chemical Hygiene Officer is responsible for decision-making based on established procedures and integration/interpretation of relevant laws, regulations, organizational policy, professional best practices, and relevant science methodology. The individual’s decisions may impact other EH&S programs, departments, segments of the organization and/or organization wide. They will identify, evaluate, and control chemical workplace hazards and develop chemical safety training programs for all levels of faculty, research staff, teaching assistants and laboratory personnel. Additionally, the individual will also respond to campus emergencies involving potentially hazardous materials.

What You Will Bring to This Position (Required):

  • B.S. degree in Chemistry or Occupational Safety in research or related field and/or equivalent work experience/training with a minimum of 7-year safety experience in a research/industry setting or M.S. degree in Chemistry with a minimum of 4 years of experience in a research/industry setting Advanced or expert knowledge/understanding of broad range of EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields Strong chemistry background with recent experience in research safety Professional level of knowledge with broad-based laboratory experience in a research environment Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend organization policy Demonstrated experience in developing a comprehensive environmental health and safety programs Advanced skill to effectively represent the organization to state and federal authorities, and community groups Proven skill in working independently and following through on duties with minimal direction Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced business acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment Skilled in training development, instruction, and good public speaking skills Advanced skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and database programs Skill in setting priorities in order to complete work in a timely manner
