Position Summary: The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) in Juneau is seeking a skilled teacher-scholar to fill a tenure-track position in Chemistry to begin August, 2023. This position will support undergraduate Bachelor of Science programs in Biology, Marine Biology, Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, and Environmental Sciences through teaching, research and service. Candidates who are interested in developing innovative interdisciplinary research programs (bridging chemistry and biology) with emphasis on overcoming challenges related to human health and the marine environment are especially welcome. Duties:

 

100 The primary teaching duties will include General Chemistry I and II lecture, labs, and recitation (CHEM S105, S105L, S105R, S106, S106L, S106R); Organic Chemistry I lecture and lab (CHEM S321), and Biochemistry lecture and lab (CHEM S342). The successful candidate will also develop new courses in their area of expertise, establish a research program that includes opportunities for undergraduate research, and conduct service. Hold office hours appropriate for the course(s) being taught. Be proactive in developing and modifying curriculum for delivery and other teaching modalities. Provide University and Community service. Write publications. Develop new research and teaching areas. Help establish a strong externally funded program. Develop and teach an undergraduate and/or graduate course. The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching lower and upper division courses in chemistry, biochemistry, biological chemistry and upper division courses in their area of expertise.

 

Faculty at UAS are expected to establish an externally funded research program that involves undergraduates. Preference will be given to applicants with a background in mariculture/aquaculture, marine biochemistry, or natural products chemistry and can provide local research and educational opportunities for undergraduate students.

 

Participation in shared governance, usually by working in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments such as advising, assessment and lab coordination is a required component of this position.

 

UAS is a small liberal arts university with academic programs in the sciences that take advantage of the natural environment surrounding the campus. The UAS Juneau campus is located 12 miles north of downtown Juneau in a beautiful setting overlooking Auke Bay on one side and Auke Lake and the Mendenhall Glacier on the other. Typical Experience:Demonstrated ability to teach both lower and upper division chemistry, biology, and marine biology courses is required.

Preference will be given to applicants with a background in mariculture/aquaculture, phycology, marine biochemistry, and natural products chemistry.

Preference will be given to individuals with the demonstrated ability to provide local field and/or lab research and educational opportunities for our undergraduates.

Previous experience teaching diverse student populations is preferred.

Required Education or Training:

 

Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biology, Marine Biology, or a related field is required. Demonstrated ability to teach chemistry and biology or marine biology courses.

 

Salary Information:

 

This is a 9-month per year, tenure-track position with a competitive salary and https://www.alaska.edu/jobs/benefits/ including negotiable relocation and start-up funds.
