Job Details

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Expertise should be in the area of environmental chemistry. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning in the fall semester 2023, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.

Founded in 1833, Oberlin is a private four-year, highly selective national liberal arts college near Cleveland, Ohio and is also home to an outstanding Conservatory of Music. Oberlin College is a national leader among liberal arts colleges in successfully placing graduates into PhD programs and was one of the first undergraduate colleges to receive the HHMI Inclusive Excellence Award. Through this program, Oberlin aims to advance its historic role in inclusion by enhancing the climate for and success of a diverse population in STEM. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has about 25 majors in each graduating class. Faculty members teach at all levels of the curriculum and are active in original research that provides opportunities for undergraduate participation. Housed in the Science Center, the department is well equipped for teaching and research. Instrumentation includes 400-MHz and 600-MHz multinuclear FT-NMR spectrometers, chromatographic (GC-ECD/FID, GC-MS, LC-MS), and biochemical instrumentation, X-ray powder diffractometer, SEM, thermal analysis (TGA/DTA, DSC, bomb calorimetry), FT-IR, atomic absorption, fluorescence and UV-Vis-NIR spectrometers and plate readers, as well as a supercomputer cluster with computational chemistry software. 

The incumbent will teach the standard teaching load (4.5 courses per year) including environmental chemistry courses at all levels, analytical chemistry, and introductory chemistry.

The incumbent will also be expected to engage in sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising and service on committees.

Through the incumbent’s teaching of analytical chemistry and their specific research program, they will be an expert user of many of our communal department instruments. All members of the department share responsibility in maintaining instrumentation..

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the PhD degree (in hand or expected by first semester of academic year 2023-24). Postdoctoral experience is desirable. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
