Assistant Professor Position in Chemistry beginning Fall 2023.

Qualifications: The Department of Chemistry at Alma College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Analytical Chemistry or closely related fields of study.  Applicants must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment; postdoctoral experience is viewed positively.  Applicants from all areas of analytical chemistry or related fields (forensics, environmental, materials science, etc.) are encouraged to apply.  Candidates for a faculty position should enjoy teaching a wide variety of courses and be committed to undergraduate liberal arts education.

Teaching Responsibilities: The successful applicant will have the primary responsibility of teaching Instrumental Analysis (CHM 320) and the associated laboratory. Additional courses could include Chemical Analysis (CHM 115, the first semester introductory chemistry course), other core courses in the major, upper-level courses of the candidate’s design, or courses supporting the college’s First Year Seminar and General Education programs.  All members of the department also participate in the instruction of the capstone Senior Seminar (CHM 450) during the Winter Term. Interdisciplinary opportunities include collaborations with colleagues in biology, physics, physiology, and environmental studies programs.  The normal annual teaching load is four lecture sections and four laboratory sections, or three lecture sections and six laboratory sections.

Research and Service Responsibilities:  The successful candidate is expected to establish a productive research program and scholarship agenda that involves undergraduate students. Service to the college through committee work and other activities is expected of all tenure-track faculty.  External service to the public and to the scientific community are supported.

The Department of Chemistry: The successful applicant will become part of an ACS certified program of five chemists and an associated biochemistry program. The faculty has a deep commitment to quality liberal arts education; student development in a residential setting; student research; ethical and safe practices; and interdisciplinary, intercultural, and international education. Salary, benefits, and support for professional development are competitive.

Facilities: The Department is housed in the Ronald O. Kapp Science and Laboratory Center.  Laboratories have good ventilation and hood space, and are arranged in suites with adjacent instrumentation labs.  Instrumentation includes:  400 MHz multinuclear NMR, GC, GC/MS, FT-IR, microwave synthesizer, HPLC, IC, AA, UV-VIS, ITC, FPLC, glovebox, and computer workstations with Spartan electronic structure software.  Please see http://www.alma.edu/academics/chemistry for more detail.

Application:  Submit a curriculum vitae, letter of application, a statement of teaching philosophy, a statement of your commitment to teaching and learning in a diverse environment, a research plan description, and arrange to have three letters of reference sent electronically to Mrs. Julie Elenbaas, Science Secretary, elenbaas@alma.edu.

Review of applications will begin on October 3, 2022.
