Job Details

Roanoke College invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Chemistry Department, starting August 2023.  A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related field is required.  ABD candidates will be considered, as long as requirements will be completed prior to the start date. The successful candidate will have a commitment to excellence in teaching, establish an active successful undergraduate research program, and will contribute to an inclusive scholarly community. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Founded in 1842, Roanoke College is a nationally-ranked, independent, co-educational, 4-year liberal arts college affiliated with the Lutheran Church (ELCA), located in the beautiful Roanoke Valley of Virginia. We seek and welcome students of all races, creeds, nationalities, and ethnic origins. A Phi Beta Kappa institution, Roanoke College is an equal opportunity employer and actively seeks diversity among its faculty, staff, and students.  To enhance curricular innovation, enrich the educational experiences of our students, and strengthen institutional excellence, we especially encourage applications from candidates who identify as part of one or more communities traditionally under-represented in sciences.  In a separate statement, the applicant should describe how their previous experiences and/or future plans will allow them to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion as a teacher-scholar at an undergraduate institution.

Our department offers B.S. and B.A. degrees in both biochemistry and chemistry. Teaching duties will include biochemistry or organic chemistry, general chemistry, courses in the college’s general education curriculum, and other courses as appropriate for the candidate’s interests.  The teaching load at Roanoke is a total of three sections (any combination of lectures or labs) per semester, plus one May Term course every third year.  Experience and/or interest in teaching freshman seminar/writing across the curriculum is a plus.

Research with undergraduates in biochemistry and/or chemistry is expected.  Faculty members are expected to maintain an active research agenda appropriate to an undergraduate institution. Start-up funds, dedicated space, and ongoing support for research are available. In their research statement, applicants should articulate their interests and detail how their research would involve and engage undergraduates. To learn about our facilities, instrumentation, and ACS- and ASBMB-approved programs, visit https://www.roanoke.edu/inside/a-z_index/chemistry/hiring_2022 .

Applications should be submitted by October 14 for full consideration.  Pending approval, invitations for the first round of interviews will be made shortly thereafter.  Applications (print or electronic) must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, unofficial graduate and undergraduate transcripts, teaching statement, statement of research interests, and a diversity statement. Applicants should also arrange to have three recommendation letters (print or electronic) arrive from the recommender or a reference service not later than October 14th, 2022.  Send application materials to: Chemistry Search, Roanoke College, 221 College Lane, Salem, VA 24153-3794 or chem_search@roanoke.edu.  Questions about the position may be directed to Dr. Tim Johann, Chemistry Department Chair, 540-375-2364, johann@roanoke.edu
