The Department of Chemistry at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Physical-Polymer Chemistry for Fall 2023, beginning August 28, 2023. 

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Southern Maine is comprised of active and engaged faculty who are committed to involving students in scientific research and has been a leader in providing students with meaningful research experiences early in the curriculum.  Further information about the USM Chemistry Department can be found here

The primary teaching responsibilities will be physical chemistry lecture and laboratory, general chemistry lecture and laboratory, and advanced undergraduate courses.  Preference will be given to candidates who can teach the listed courses, and who can collaborate with the Composite Engineering Research Laboratory (https://www.cerlmaine.org) for their research.

Applicants are expected to involve undergraduates in their research and engage in university and professional service. Opportunities to form interdisciplinary collaborations are encouraged. Responsibilities include undergraduate lecture and lab (normally totaling three classes per semester), advising of students, directing undergraduate projects, maintaining an active program of research and other scholarly activity. 

The targeted starting date for this position will begin in Fall 2023 on our Portland Campus and will pay annual salary of $60,500.  This is an on campus, in-person teaching position.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Polymer or Physical Chemistry or an equivalent degree is required by date of appointment.  Demonstrated effective teaching, strong potential for obtaining external research funding, and effective written and oral communication skills are also required.
