Sr. Scientist, Fermentation
Location: Durham, NC

We are seeking a Sr. Scientist, Fermentation to support the commercialization of biobased processes. The Sr. Scientist will lead a small dedicated team responsible for demonstrating strain and process performance at bench scale and for supporting technology transfer of strains and processes into and out of the team. Successful candidates will have 8+ years previous experience in leading a microbial fermentation team, will be able to quickly learn new concepts that are specific to support our technology and approach, and will be an exceptional team player.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership of fermentation team
  • Rigorous quality control of fermentation experiments
  • Experimental planning across multiple projects
  • High level result reporting
  • Managing and coordinating complex experimental schedules within a broader team
  • Maintaining, analyzing, and reporting on results to the larger team, including external stakeholders
  • Troubleshooting and improving processes
  • Maintaining safe practices and work environment

Qualifications

We prefer candidates with technical training in chemical engineering and previous experience in leading a small team at an emerging company. Demonstrated experience in statistical analyses, Design of Experiments (DoE), and manipulation of large data sets required. In addition, we prefer candidates with experience in the following areas:

  • Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering with 8+ years related experience, or MS degree in Chemical Engineering with 13 years related experience, or BS degree in Chemical Engineering with 15 years related experience
  • Exceptional understanding of key chemical engineering principles that impact fermentation bioprocesses (e.g. mass transfer)
  • Direct, hands-on experience with bench scale microbial fermentation
  • Direct, hands-on experience with aseptic technique and bench scale bioprocessing
  • Direct experience in statistical analyses and Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Quantitative, data-driven analysis of experimental results and an analytical mind-set
  • Familiarity with Python or similar programming language preferred
  • Experience in drafting and revising detailed SOPs and protocols
  • Capability to manage multiple work-flows and experiments within a single day
  • Ability to effectively work in cross-disciplinary teams
  • Must be a self-starter, motivated, scientifically curious, and collaborative
  • Must be comfortable with and able to make good decisions in the face of the uncertainty that is inherent in development and emerging companies
  • Flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Mandatory vaccination policy in place in response to COVID-19 pandemic
