The Division of Chemical and Biological Sciences of Ames National Laboratory is seeking a Scientist II.

The Scientist II position conceives, designs, and conducts studies and designs and implements high performance software in the areas of theoretical and computational quantum mechanics. The position collaborates with the supervisor and other PIs within the Division of Chemical and Biochemical Sciences at Ames National Laboratory, ISU and externally; designs and implements highly scalable and flexible quantum chemistry software; invents, performs and conducts investigations; interprets the results; presents and defends research at professional and project meetings; drafts manuscripts for publication with collaborating co-authors; guides researchers on software engineering and research techniques; and writes research proposals for future funding of research projects (as PI or co-PI).

The successful candidate will possess strong communication skills to effectively interact with experienced colleagues in interdisciplinary fields for successful collaboration on research projects. The ability to timely plan, initiate, and execute research activities is important for success in this position. In addition, the successful candidate will mentor other researchers in the supervisor’s work groups and prepare reports as necessary for the funding agencies.

AL Scientist II Required qualifications

  • PhD degree and 1 year of related experience

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD in physical chemistry or related field
  • Experience with developing, testing, and using computer programs with excellent software engineering techniques.
  • Extensive experience with the latest versions C++, especially with advanced C++ techniques such as template meta programming and type-erasure.
  • Extensive experience with the latest versions of Python.
  • Proven ability to deliver excellent software products.
  • Experience in working with theoretical and computational scientists and engineers in fields related to software design and implementation.
  • Experience with developing and using quantum mechanics based computational chemistry programs.
  • Experience in developing and analyzing embedding methods.
  • Experience with collaborative software engineering development software, such as git, GitHub, CMake, and CLion.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of challenges and new directions in quantum mechanics methods and software as applied to real physical systems.
  • Experience in mentoring and leadership.
