    POSITION DESCRIPTION
Engineering for and from biology provides new solutions to improve global health, tackle environmental challenges, and delivery new biomaterials and bio-energy sources. The questions of who designs these solutions, who we engineer for, and how these solutions impact society are important questions that we seek to ask ourselves. UC Santa Barbara understands that this is too important to the future of our society to be left to a single discipline or limited population -- and we are building a department ready to address these questions head-on in authentic partnership with thought leaders across our campus and the world. UC Santa Barbara is a premier top-5 public research university. Chemical Engineering and Biological Engineering seek leaders working at the intersection of these fields. Chemical Engineering is consistently ranked in the top 10 in the field and Biological Engineering is an emergent department in the highly ranked College of Engineering. Our College, includes among its faculty three Nobel laureates, 15 members of the National Academy of Engineering, 5 members of the National Academy of Science, and 13 fellows of the National Academy of Inventors. UCSB Engineering is home to the west coast hub of the BioPACIFIC NSF Materials Innovation Platform for Bio-based Polymers, Automated Cellular Infrastructure, Flow, and Integrated Chemistry, of the nation's first Quantum Foundry, as well as of one of the top NSF Materials Research Science & Engineering Centers in the country. We seek faculty eager to build on our existing collaborations in the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnology, Center for Integrated Nano Systems, Center for Engineering and Science Partnerships, the Center for Black Studies Research, Institute of Neuroscience, the Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering, the Institute for Energy Efficiency and well beyond, and to help us establish new partnerships and research programs bringing computation and computational tools to problems of societal importance. We seek motivated and passionate researchers eager to work with a community of their peers to address issues of societal importance through creative applications of Biological Engineering. Successful candidates for faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion in their application materials, including the Diversity Statement. The appointment will be in joint between Chemical and Biological Engineering but affiliate appointments in any number of partner departments across engineering, social sciences, humanities, and/or physical sciences are possible and encouraged. UC Santa Barbara understands that bioengineering, biotechnology, and chemical engineering intersect society in many complex ways but that by striving to be a place where every student, faculty, and staff can grow and thrive we will position ourselves to best be able to take on these challenges together.

Applicants will be considered by an interdisciplinary group of faculty and all applicants must have a demonstrated record of excellence in, or show exceptional promise for, high-quality research, teaching, and service to the community. Applicants with a demonstrated record of interest in, and commitment to, the mentorship of students from underrepresented and underserved populations will be given particular attention. Candidates will be offered the opportunity to satisfy a portion of their undergraduate teaching responsibilities through active mentoring and leadership in programs that provide research and professional development opportunities for our diverse student body (e.g. through the Los Ingenieros, Society of Women Engineers, the Early Research Scholars Program, or the CBSR Student Engagement and Enrichment in Data Science Program).
We seek scientists and educators leading cutting-edge areas to help the University prepare our students and position the University for the future. Our goal is to identify, recruit, and support a scholar emerging as one of the next generation of leaders and educators.

The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and inclusive excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.
