THE SEARCH
Augusta University seeks an experienced academic and administrative leader to serve as the Chair of the Department of Chemistry within its College of Science and Mathematics. In 2021, the College moved to a new building located on the University’s Health Sciences Campus in close proximity to the Medical College of Georgia, the Dental College of Georgia, and the Georgia Cancer Center which provides opportunities for the faculty to initiate and participate in cross-disciplinary research collaborations in the biomedical sciences and health care. A build-out of the top floor of the Science and Mathematics building, currently in process, will provide 28,765 square feet of research laboratories and support spaces.

Augusta University seeks a Chair who will apply innovative leadership strategies to program development and to mentoring and supporting students and faculty. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, work closely with the faculty to promote excellence in teaching, research, and service, facilitate faculty efforts at seeking external grant support, strategically manage the allocation of the department’s resources and facilities, and represent the Department’s interests to the Dean and upper administration. While encouraging and further developing a student-centric environment and innovative teaching methods, the Chair will champion the strengths of the Department in fostering a culture of research and exploring opportunities to launch new graduate programs. The Chair will work closely with other departments and divisions within the College of Science and Mathematics and the broader University community to ensure an atmosphere of collaboration, shared knowledge, and cooperation in both its teaching and research missions.

The Department of Chemistry offers two undergraduate degree programs that lead to the BS or the BA in Chemistry. The BS offers an American Chemical Society-approved concentration in Professional Chemistry as well as concentrations in Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Medicinal Chemistry, and Nuclear Science. Via a collaboration between the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Biological Sciences, the College of Science and Mathematics offers an interdisciplinary program leading to the MS in Biomolecular Science with concentrations in Medicinal Chemistry and Cell and Molecular Biology. Chemistry programs are currently housed in a combined Department of Chemistry and Physics, with separation into two departments to be completed by Fall 2023.

Augusta University is one of four designated research universities in the University System of Georgia, and the state’s only public academic medical center. It was formed through the consolidation of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University (formerly the Medical College of Georgia) in 2013. It is dedicated to training the next generation of innovators, leaders, and health care providers on its four campuses in Augusta and five satellite locations across Georgia, offering undergraduate programs in the sciences, liberal arts, computer and cyber science, business, and education, as well as a range of graduate and professional programs and hands-on clinical research opportunities. With the state’s only public medical school, only dental school, and affiliation with Augusta University Health System including a teaching hospital, Augusta University is becoming a destination of choice for students interested in careers in healthcare and related fields. Governed by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, Augusta University has 9812 total students across its 10 colleges and schools and offers 155 degree and certificate programs: 47 undergraduate programs, 38 graduate programs, 19 doctoral and professional programs, and 51 certificate programs. The University and University Health System employ approximately 11,459 people, including over 1,800 faculty members, with an operating budget of $900 million in fiscal year 2023.

The university is near Fort Gordon, home of the U.S. Army’s Signal Corps, Cyber Center of Excellence, Cyber Command, and NSA-Georgia. The Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site and Savannah River National Laboratory are nearby.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Doctoral degree in chemistry or a closely related field
• Earned tenure
• A record of professional achievements supporting appointment at the rank of professor.
• Previous leadership/administrative experience is desirable
• Strong record of teaching, research, and external funding. The area of specialization is
open.
