NCASI is an organization serving the forest products industry as a center of excellence providing unbiased scientific research and technical information necessary to achieve the environmental and sustainability goals of the industry. We are seeking a Research Scientist with strong background in analytical chemistry, who is also familiar with EPA and other environmental test methods, to work with the analytical team at our Newberry Office and Laboratories. The successful candidate will possess a strong background in analytical chemistry, including environmental, organic, and inorganic chemistries. The laboratory encompasses 3,600 square feet and contains state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation and equipment including GC/MSs, other types of GC/Detector systems, LC/MS/MS, HPLC, Ion chromatography, nutrient analyzers, and UV-Vis.
Essential Job Functions
The primary role of this Research Scientist is to conduct environmental analytical testing using organic and inorganic analytical methods as well as to participate in the development of new methods when necessary. The activities described herein are representative of those required to be successful in this role.
- Participate in the organization and execution of research projects involving analytical components, either utilizing established quantitative analytical methods, or developing/evaluating new methods as required, to address project analytical needs.
- Implement established quantitative analytical methods using GC/MS, GC-FID, GC-ECD, GC-PFPD, GC-NPD, HPLC-PDA, IC, and LC/MS/MS systems.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot multiple GC, GC/MS, LC/MS/MS, and other instrument systems in the laboratory.
- Provide analytical advice, analytical method reviews and auditing of contract laboratory data for member companies and forest products industry-affiliated organizations.
- Support the authorship of NCASI technical reports on the development and implementation of analytical methods developed in-house, and the performance of other analytical methods when applied to samples obtained from pulp, paper, wood products and related sources.
- Be an active and collaborative member of the analytical team by actively participating in meetings, serving on standing or temporary teams, and assisting others in the lab in a manner that enhances the overall efficiency and effectiveness of lab operations.
- Maintain comprehensive laboratory notebooks, a neat and orderly laboratory workplace, and adhere to laboratory quality plans, QA/QC measures and SOPs.
- Prepare laboratory reports for project leaders and member companies as well as other written communications that meet the highest standards of quality.
- Prepare and present scientifically sound technical information and research findings for NCASI staff and, as appropriate, at NCASI conferences, webcasts, and other technical meetings.
- Read, absorb, process, and communicate complex information. Respond to internal technical queries in a competent and timely manner.
- Work safely and contribute to updating and improving laboratory safety practices.
- Master’s degree in analytical chemistry or closely associated scientific discipline with 3+ years of hands-on research/method development experience with analytical techniques applied to environmental matrices. Recent PhD graduates and those with Bachelor’s degrees and extensive hands-on methods development experience will also be considered.
- Familiar with environmental test methods such as clean water act methods, clean air act methods, SW 846, and other environmental methods.
- Strong verbal and written communication and data analysis skills.
- Strong computer skills with knowledge in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience with or ability to learn industry-specific software such as ChemStation, Mass Hunter and NCASI’s laboratory information management system in a timely manner.
- Must be able to get to and work from the Newberry, Florida office, follow safety procedures, and work at benchtops. Must be able to traverse stairs, effectively manipulate analytical glassware and instrumentation, and stand for long periods while working at benchtops or in the field. May be required to lift and carry equipment up to 30 pounds.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Hands on experience in Gas and/or High-Performance Liquid Chromatography analyses and related analytical method SOPs.
- Strongly prefer hands-on research/method development experience on environmental matrices.
