JOB SUMMARY

The Institute of Materials Science (IMS), an interdisciplinary research institute on the Storrs campus, is seeking a Stockroom Manager to manage and distribute materials supporting research and instructional activities in the new Science 1 building. This position is part of the Institute’s Office for Finance and Administration, providing hands-on support to faculty members and research groups who are affiliated with or reside within the unit. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical duties include:

  1. Monitor compliance with safety protocols and assist with enforcement of departmental safety rules throughout lab and teaching spaces in the Science 1 building.
  2. Perform duties in support of materials and safety for Polymer Program courses, including:
    1. Chemical/sample preparation for characterization, rheology, and special topics courses.
    2. Participation in laboratory components for Polymer certificate program.
    3. Conduct safety introduction lectures for lab courses and incoming graduate students.
    4. Ordering and maintaining chemicals and equipment for Polymer laboratory courses.
    5. Prepare and maintain AV and other special equipment in seminar rooms.
  3. Work routinely with a full range of chemicals, compressed gas cylinders, and dry-goods supplies stocked by IMS for use by member groups.
  4. Maintain detailed records of inventory items received and signed out; compile detailed financial records monthly for invoicing.
  5. Monitor inventory levels for stockroom supplies and perform procurement activities for replenishment, as needed.
  6. Manage an online chemical inventory database, in accordance with UConn Environmental Health and Safety requirements.
  7. Communicate with departments, faculty, staff, and students to ensure the proper ordering, barcoding, and management of laboratory chemicals.
  8. Train faculty, staff, and students to manage their online chemical inventories and access safety data sheets.
  9. Ensure proper working order and housekeeping of the IMS stockroom.
  10. Assist IMS stakeholders with outgoing shipments, in accordance with unit, federal and state regulations, and University policy.
  11. Assure the security, storage, and safe handling of stockroom items and shipments received for the unit.
  12. Assist the IMS building manager in creating and maintaining appropriate records including standard operating procedures, facilities checklists, and safety documentation.
  13. Serve on the IMS Safety Committee.
  14. Safely dispensing bulk chemicals to IMS research groups, including bonding and grounding of flammable liquids, while adhering to strict safety standards.
  15. Manages hazardous and other regulated wastes generated in the IMS stockroom.
  16. Provide direct support to capital asset inventory and tracking for the unit.
  17. Conduct routine calibration of balances in Science 1 laboratories.
  18. Perform other related laboratory support duties as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field and 1-2 years of experience, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to strict hazardous materials safety procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to move containers weighing up to 50lbs to and from locations varying in height from 10 to 36 inches.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior work experience in a higher education laboratory setting.
  • Experience in chemical inventory management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of commonly accepted safety practices for handling hazardous materials.
  • Completion of OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER, OSHA Hazard Communication, and/or EPA Resource Conservation and Recovery Act training.
  • Working knowledge of inventory administration concepts (e.g., FIFO).
  • Experience with procurement tasks and recordkeeping.
  • Experience writing and communicating laboratory procedures and outcomes in a professional setting.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month position, with an anticipated start date of December 30, 2022. The University offers a competitive salary and outstanding benefits. Other rights, terms, and conditions of employment are contained in the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA).
