Job Details

The College of Engineering (COE) and the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan invite applications for full-time tenure-track or tenured positions in quantum science and technology to begin August 28, 2023. As part of an initiative in quantum science and technology at the University, 8 new faculty will be hired. These faculty can be rostered in the following departments (jointly if appropriate): LSA/Physics, COE/Electrical and Computer Engineering, LSA/Math, COE/Computer Science and Engineering, LSA/Chemistry, COE/Materials Science and Engineering, depending on the best fit for the applicant. The appointment is based on a 9 month academic year.

Successful candidates will focus on foundational research and development for advanced quantum technologies exploiting entanglement and coherent superposition. We are particularly interested in people leading in transformative research and disruptive technologies, engaging and leveraging the University’s existing strengths in quantum-light information science and technology, including advanced spectroscopy, quantum phenomena in semiconductors, Rydberg atoms, two-dimensional quantum materials, quantum integration, quantum dynamics and computation, quantum control, quantum field theories, and algorithms or systems software for quantum-information processing. We invite diverse candidates across all these areas to apply.

The University of Michigan is one of the world’s leading research universities, with $1.62B in research expenditures (FY2020). It is ranked the #1 public research university by the National Science Foundation, and 3rd best U.S. public university by US News and World Report (2022). Our departments pride themselves on the mentoring of junior faculty towards a successful career. Ann Arbor is highly rated as a family friendly best-place-to-live.

All application materials should be submitted online through (http://quantum.umich.edu/faculty-applications). Materials should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of teaching philosophy and experience, statement of current and future research plans. Additionally, please include a personal statement and diversity statement that demonstrates your commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through scholarship/research, and/or teaching/mentoring, and/or service/engagement. Applicants at the assistant professor level should also submit names and contact information for at least three letters of reference.  For applicants above the rank of assistant professor, teaching evaluations and other evidence of teaching excellence should be included.

For any questions, please contact quantum-admin@umich.edu. Review of applications will begin December 15, 2022.

Offers for this appointment are contingent on successful completion of a background screening. The University of Michigan is supportive of the needs of dual career couples and is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply.

This offer is contingent upon reporting your COVID19 proof of vaccinations no later than one week before your appointment start date. You may request a medical or religious exemption; however, successful completion of the exemption process must occur prior to your start date. If you will not be up to date on your vaccinations at the time of hire (defined as receiving all recommended doses in the primary vaccine series and one booster when eligible), you may request an exemption. A temporary postponement may be requested if you are unable to receive the primary series or booster in your country of origin or current location.
