POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Environmental Studies Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, teaching professor position (known under the title of L(P)SOE (Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023.

Specific areas of expertise are open but should relate to environmental chemistry. This can include pollution and toxicology, but also the chemical functioning of terrestrial, atmospheric, or aquatic ecosystems, or other aspects of chemistry in the environment.

The successful candidate will take on a two-quarter (with a one quarter laboratory) introductory environmental chemistry sequence for Environmental Studies majors in the B.A. track, as well as upper division classes in their personal area(s) of expertise. Candidate will be expected to advise senior honors students studying these areas, and to participate in training and evaluating temporary lecturers. The ideal candidate would have practical experience working in environmental chemistry as well as university-level experience teaching both science and non-science students.

UCSB's Environmental Studies Program is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that was founded in the aftermath of the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. It has maintained a position of national leadership since then, graduating over 8000 students in both B.A. and B.S. degree tracks. The program has a longstanding commitment to integrative research and teaching and to interdisciplinary balance among the biophysical and chemical sciences, engineering sciences, humanities, social sciences, and applied professions. For more information, please see http://www.es.ucsb.edu/.

Responsibilities of teaching faculty include teaching and teaching-related tasks for lower and upper division undergraduate courses; mentorship of undergraduate, and possibly graduate students; professional and/or scholarly achievement and creative activity, potentially relating to instruction and pedagogy; and participation in university service. Faculty in this title are members of the Academic Senate, with all of the associated benefits and privileges.

Successful candidates will be able to contribute to the improvement of the undergraduate experience in the department and division. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through teaching, service, and research as appropriate to the position. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are among the university's core values, and we look forward to welcoming ambitious and creative colleagues who will contribute to the university's mission.
