Job Details
Applications are invited for the position of Chair, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science. Applications from internal or external candidates, who hold at least the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, will be considered. A record of high-quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision, and research in Chemistry, as well as substantial administrative leadership experience is required. Applicants must have a PhD degree in Chemistry or related discipline, and a strong record of research productivity in the form of external funding, publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals, awards, invited talks and other scholarly achievements. The successful candidate will have a clear vision for the direction of the Department, together with the demonstrated collegial leadership ability, integrity, and communication skills to realize this vision. As a strong advocate for the department, the successful candidate will be energetic and able to recognize, take, and create opportunities, in light of a shared vision of the future of the discipline. The desired candidate must have the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within the department, the faculty, and across Western, as well as in the Canadian Chemistry community.
The Chair will consult with the Dean on Departmental budgetary requirements and administer the Departmental budget. The Chair will also be expected to develop and facilitate the implementation of a Departmental academic, research and administrative plan that will aim to position the Department within the top tier of Canadian Chemistry departments. Furthermore, the Chair will be a part of the Faculty of Science leadership team and as such, will have input into the annual budget and academic planning process for the Faculty of Science. The Chair will develop and implement a strategy for mentoring, developing, and supporting Departmental faculty and staff across career stages, with a strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization (EDI-D).
About the Department: The Department of Chemistry (https://www.uwo.ca/chem/) provides a nationally accredited program in Chemistry, together with large and successful doctoral and master’s programs. Research fields encompass a range of complementary and interrelated disciplines spanning much of the breadth of modern Chemistry. The multidisciplinary character of the Department’s interests and expertise has resulted in teaching and research collaborations across Western’s campus. The successful applicant will be appointed to the Department of Chemistry as a tenured faculty member (at the rank of associate or full professor), depending upon qualifications and experience. The term of the Chair appointment will be negotiated, but normally is a renewable five-year term. The appointment is anticipated to commence on July 1, 2023.
