FACULTY POSITION AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UC SAN DIEGO

Trace Gases in the Atmosphere

We seek outstanding candidates for a faculty position (research and teaching) to be filled at any level.
We seek applicants with interests in using in situ atmospheric measurements to quantify sources and sinks of atmospheric trace gases on global and regional scales and associated impacts on stratospheric ozone depletion, anthropogenic climate change, and other large-scale environmental issues. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: innovative methods for measuring a broad range of greenhouse gases and ozone depleting substances in the regional and global atmosphere; large-scale studies of industrial and biogenic emissions and atmospheric chemistries of these gases; and/or inverse modeling of their regional source and sink distributions based on atmospheric observations. Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) is home to the central laboratory for the international Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE). The ideal candidate should have the potential to leverage and help shape the capabilities and pursuits of this program.

We intend to fill one position, at either the Assistant (tenure track) or Associate/Full (tenured) level. Applications at all levels will be given full consideration. Institutional procedures require separate applications for untenured and tenured levels. Candidates who are unsure of their appropriate level are encouraged to apply at both levels. A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in relevant fields (examples include atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric physics, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, and chemical oceanography) is required at the time of application. Rank and salary will be determined by qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. SIO is a world-renowned center of oceanographic, atmospheric, biological, and solid earth research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The department is interested in candidates who can demonstrate a commitment to inclusive excellence by providing leadership in teaching, mentoring, research, and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

Applications will be evaluated either on the stated vision and plans for (Assistant), or documented development of (Associate/Full) i.) a vigorous, externally funded, and internationally recognized research program and associated scholarly impact; ii.) teaching, mentoring, and advising within the SIO undergraduate and graduate programs; iii.) service and broader contributions to diversity, noting explicit examples of success; iv.) leadership activities, and v.) other activities or facilities that might contribute positively to departmental welfare.

For full consideration, please apply by January 10, 2023.
