Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences - Our Commitment to Diversity:
The Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences is committed to advancing an inclusive community in which everyone is welcomed, respected, valued and heard. We believe our community is enriched by diversity along a number of dimensions, including race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender expression, sexuality, class, disability, religion, and political ideology/identification. We acknowledge the historical and current structural inequities that present challenges to both the access and success of historically disadvantaged groups. We have developed specific goals and key strategies to strengthen inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging within our college community.
Required Qualifications
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Akron (https://www.uakron.edu/chemistry/) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Chemistry, focusing on biochemistry, or physical and/or forensic chemistry.
We seek to assemble a cohort of teacher-scholars who will offer a strong contribution to the diversity and excellence of UA through teaching, scholarship, service and collaboration. Specifically, as an urban-research university, we are particularly interested in scholars whose work touches on the pressing needs of cities and urban communities. As part of this group, these tenure track biochemistry and physical chemistry positions will support the department’s core mission in chemical education and our service teaching to engineering, biology, and health science students. We seek candidates who are committed to increasing diversity in the sciences and supporting our unique and diverse student body. Candidates who share our vision are strongly encouraged to apply.
For the biochemistry position, we welcome candidates in all areas of biochemistry but overlap with the fields of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry will also be considered. For the second position, we welcome candidates in all areas of experimental physical chemistry and forensic chemistry. In addition to the key chemistry curricula at the undergraduate and graduate level, these candidates will be expected to establish independent, externally funded research group and carry out high-impact investigations that can be disseminated in quality peer review journals and invited or contributed presentations. Competitive applicants will also propose ways to address aspects of diversity in terms of service and outreach, addressing the needs of the highly diverse urban-research community.
For the biochemistry position, successful candidates will have an earned Ph.D. in chemistry, biology, or a related discipline and demonstrated active research experience in the study of biochemistry broadly defined. For the physical chemistry position, successful candidates will have an earned Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or a related discipline and demonstrated active research experience in the study of physical chemistry or forensic chemistry broadly defined. Candidates should also include a diversity statement in their application, describing your past and potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In particular, in this statement, applicants should address how these contributions will fit in with UA’s mission as an urban-research university.
Preferred Qualifications
Applicants with demonstrated experience during postdoctoral research in an academic or industrial setting will be given favorable consideration. However, the requirement for experience past the doctoral degree may be waived for exceptional candidates. Research plans that complement existing strengths in the department and University community are highly desirable.
