Position Title: Three-Year Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Job Description
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the School of Sciences at Elizabethtown College invites applications for a three year, full-time (9-month) Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry position to begin August 1, 2023. The chosen individual will have teaching and research interest in physical/materials chemistry.

Elizabethtown College is committed to investing in the growth of the School of Sciences and we are looking to hire diverse faculty to support our increasingly diverse student body. Approximately 30% of Elizabethtown College students are first-generation college students. The School and faculty are committed to preparing students for lifelong learning, service, and professional outcomes.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry consists of five full-time faculty members who value collaboration, interdisciplinary thinking, and high-quality student-focused teaching, with an emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The primary majors offered by the department are Chemistry, which has been certified by the American Chemical Society for over 50 years, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB). Following a teacher-scholar model, faculty members in the department engage undergraduates in meaningful research and scientific advancement. Examples of recent outcomes from this model include faculty and student publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at national and international meetings, two Goldwater Scholarship awardees, novel curricular developments, and multiple placements of students into top graduate programs and industrial positions. More information about the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry can be found here.

The teaching load at Elizabethtown College is 12 contact hours per semester. The successful individual will teach advanced courses in physical chemistry and foundational chemistry to undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds and varied levels of preparedness. An ability to contribute to the College’s Core program is preferred. The opportunity to contribute to the development of a new materials chemistry program is available, and preference will be given to candidates who have experience in this field and can teach materials chemistry coursework. The selected individual will also get to mentor undergraduate students in research and provide service to the department. The position requires effective communication, along with the ability to develop and think about outcome-driven education collaboratively with colleagues. Experience with or demonstrated interest to teach, mentor, and support students from historically underrepresented groups in science is preferred.

Applicants are expected to develop high-quality teaching and engaging research experiences for undergraduates. Elizabethtown College provides support through start-up funds, faculty mentorship, professional development, and internal grant funding. Additionally, the College provides support for summer student research and mentors and the School of Sciences is committed to mentoring early-career faculty seeking positions at predominantly undergraduate institutions.

A Ph.D. in physical chemistry or cognate field is required. ABD candidates will be reviewed with the expectation that a defense date would be set before July 1, 2023. A commitment to dynamic and innovative teaching is required. Early career individuals and groups that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM are highly encouraged to apply. A commitment to working with students of culturally diverse backgrounds and/or underprepared students and creating inclusive learning environments are preferred. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team is essential because the candidate will work in collaboration with existing faculty on the development a materials chemistry program. We prefer candidates with the ability to contribute to the diversity of our department and institution, whether through personal experience, teaching, or research.

  • The cover letter should detail your specific interest in being part of the Elizabethtown College community and how you will contribute to creating a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • The teaching statement (3 pages maximum) should detail a philosophy of teaching and emphasize strategies you will use to engage students and create an inclusive classroom and laboratory.
  • The research statement should outline past research (1 page) and include a research proposal (2-page maximum) that describes a research program that will support undergraduate research and utilize current instrumentation available at Elizabethtown College. Further information about the department’s research facilities can be found here.
  • The DEI statement (1 page) should discuss your past work and future plans in areas of teaching, research, mentorship and/or service to remove barriers and make scientific study inclusive and equitable for students from historically marginalized groups.

Applications and letters of recommendation received by January 16, 2023 will be given full consideration, and review will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries can be addressed to the search committee chair, Dr. Jodi Lancaster (lancasterj@etown.edu).
