Department Description:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of San Diego is a dynamic, student-centric department focused on the teacher-scholar model. As a department, students are engaged in the classroom and in the research lab. The department is nationally recognized as a national leader among Predominantly Undergraduate Institutions (PUI). The department has hosted numerous post-doctoral research associates over the past 15 years, most of which have sought and obtained faculty positions at other PUI’s. These postdoctoral positions include a small course load, mentoring students in undergraduate research, and high-level research in chemistry.

Detailed Description:

Dr. Timothy Clark in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of San Diego is seeking a post-doctoral faculty member under the teacher-scholar model. The position is funded by the National Science Foundation with financial commitment from the University of San Diego. The postdoctoral faculty member will teach one course per semester (two courses per academic year), mentor undergraduate researchers in Professor Clark's research group, and do research in organic/organometallic chemistry. The post-doc will be mentored in teaching and research by Professor Clark and will be engaged in the development of research projects, manuscripts for publication, and external presentations. Funds are available for professional development and travel and the post-doc will be encouraged to engage in professional development both at the University and through external opportunities.

Essential Duties

• Teach one course per semester
• Conduct research funded by Professor Clark's NSF grant
• Mentor and train undergraduate students engaged in independent research
• Meet with research collaborators both at and beyond USD

Job Requirements:

The postdoc should have research expertise in organic/organometallic chemistry, the ability to teach courses in organic and/or general chemistry, and a demonstrated interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds.

Basic qualifications:

• PhD in organic chemistry or a relevant field (must be completed by the end of summer 2023, before starting the position)
• Lab research experience in synthetic organic or organometallic chemistry
• Ability to provide dynamic teaching and appropriate mentoring for diverse students
