The College of Wooster invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry to begin August 2023. The position is renewable for a total of three years pending a positive teaching performance in 2023-24. We are looking for a broadly trained specialist in organic chemistry. The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment. Primary responsibilities include teaching organic chemistry and associated laboratory courses, with additional possible teaching opportunities in our general chemistry curriculum and in mentoring undergraduates within Wooster’s nationally-recognized Senior Independent Study research program. The Chemistry department has 8 full-time faculty members and graduates approximately 15-20 majors annually, many of whom pursue advanced study and/or careers in chemistry. For more information, see the https://wooster.edu/area/chemistry/.

The College of Wooster is an independent college of the liberal arts and sciences with a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. We enroll a racially, socioeconomically, and culturally diverse student population of approximately 1,960 undergraduate students, of which 6% identify as Latinx; 10% as Black/African American; 4%, as Asian; 4%, as multiracial; and 60%, as white. Fifteen percent (15%) of our students are studying on international visas. Twenty-five percent (25%) are Pell-eligible and 12% are first-generation college students. We are interested in hiring faculty who can contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the community through culturally relevant pedagogy, curricular diversity, intercultural fluency, and a commitment to ensuring equitable outcomes for racially and ethnically minoritized and marginalized student groups.

The Department of Chemistry is housed in a modern teaching/research space that was renovated and expanded in 2018 to integrate with our life science facilities. Department instrumentation accessible for use in student-mentored research includes a modern 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, a liquid chromatography / high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (LC-QToF), and a LC-MS/MS triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer, among other laboratory facilities.

To apply, submit a cover letter; curriculum vitae; unofficial graduate transcript(s); a one-page teaching philosophy statement; a research description of potential projects for mentoring undergraduate student research at Wooster (up to 3 pages); a statement addressing your ability to engage with issues of diversity in the classroom and the curriculum, as well as on campus and in the broader community (1-2 pages); and two letters of recommendation through Interfolio: http://apply.interfolio.com/120147. Applicants may also include evidence of effective teaching (such as syllabi and summaries of student evaluations), research (publications in preparation) or related activities to support the required materials. Review of applications will begin March 1, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. If you have questions regarding Interfolio, please contact Mary Cornelius, Administrative Coordinator, Chemistry at mcornelius@wooster.edu. Questions about the position should be directed to Karl Feierabend, chair of the Search Committee, at kfeierabend@wooster.edu.
