Operations Manager

The MIT Department of Chemistry seeks someone to assume responsibility for the daily operations of its Instrumentation Facility (DCIF) and to maintain its physical laboratory space so it’s conducive to the safe and efficient conduct of research.

 

Responsibilities include training and providing support to researchers and students using the DCIF’s NMR, EPR, and optical spectroscopy instruments; providing NMR automation and hand-on (including variable temperature NMR) training; providing EPR, FT-IR, and polarimeter training; maintaining lab instrumentation, including performing regular and preventative maintenance, diagnosing and repairing component failures, performing routine system calibrations, and handling instrument resets; maintaining computers used as instrument hosts and for offline data processing; assisting researchers and students with data for publications, including design of experiments; working with vendors on upgrading and installing instrumentation; maintaining adequate quantities of laboratory supplies and replacement parts for equipment and instrumentation; arranging maintenance of key lab services; coordinating cryogen ordering for cryomagnets and performing fills; managing compressed gas ordering for the lab; acting as the lab’s primary environmental health and safety representative; and performing other duties as directed. 

 

Required Qualifications:

B.S., preferably in chemistry or a related field Ability to interact with faculty, students, and researchers with diverse needs and interests Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment Good judgment and discretion  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with multidimensional NMR spectroscopy Advanced degree in chemistry
