Position Overview

The Chemistry Department at The University of the South is committed to ensuring the success of the diverse and talented students in our classrooms and laboratories.

To achieve this goal, we invite applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor to begin in August 2023.

The position is currently for one year, with the possibility of conversion to a tenure track line.

The department will be carrying out a tenure-track search next academic year. Review of applications will begin on March 1, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.

Position Description

The Chemistry Department at The University of the South offers majors in both chemistry and biochemistry while also providing support to many other majors.

Additionally, we maintain an active research community supported by an extensive suite of modern instrumentation used by faculty and students.

The department also deeply values undergraduate research and collaboration opportunities. As such, we will gladly welcome a new community member launching collaborative research endeavors with us or our students.

Attributes of a Successful Candidate

We seek highly qualified candidates capable of teaching in any area of physical chemistry (broadly defined). Primary teaching responsibilities will be upper-level physical chemistry courses and general chemistry, both lecture and laboratory. Other possible duties could include teaching non-major courses supporting the general education program.

A successful candidate must have a doctorate in Chemistry with training in physical chemistry or a related subfield by the date of appointment; however, applicants currently completing their degree will be equally considered. Women and members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.   To apply, please submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, unofficial copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a statement of teaching philosophy, and the contact information for a minimum of three reference letters writers. Please address your commitment to and experience with supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in both your cover letter and your teaching philosophy. If the candidate desires, they can send an optional short statement describing research plans that clearly explain how the work will be meaningful for undergraduate researchers.

Applications should be submitted directly via the institution’s job board. Questions about the position can be directed to the Chair of the Chemistry Department, F.B. Williams Professor of Chemistry Robert Bachman (rbachman@sewanee.edu).
