Professor of Practice

Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Cornell University, Ithaca, NY

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Cornell University is soliciting applications for a Professor of Practice faculty position. An exceptional individual with significant, high-level experience in various aspects of materials engineering in industry or other equivalent non‐academic organizations is sought. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of success in senior technical, research, or management positions as well as significant leadership experience in a broad range of contexts (for example, influential roles in professional, trade, manufacturing, and or standards organizations). Candidates must be highly motivated to enrich the experience of students and faculty by bringing to Cornell a deep understanding of effective practices in real-world settings.

The Professor of Practice will be expected to develop and lead a range of activities to prepare Cornell students for success working in complex organizations under real world (financial, regulatory, ethical, etc.) constraints, assist faculty in working with industry and government to effectively transition research results into beneficial technologies, and promote intellectual development in materials engineering, and particularly in manufacturing. Specifically, the Professor of Practice will grow and direct the MSE Master of Engineering (MEng) program and the MSE Industrial Affiliates program, will work with faculty across the university to create significant interdisciplinary activities that promote academy-industry collaboration (e.g. research and outreach centers) and will be involved in teaching university level courses (e.g. materials processing, product and/or process development, innovation, professional development, etc., as appropriate). Work with the MSE MEng program and the MSE Industrial Affiliates program in particular will require developing and maintaining relationships and projects with representatives of companies ranging from small local startups to major international corporations. Further information on the current MSE MEng program can be found here:

https://www.mse.cornell.edu/mse/programs/graduate-programs/master-engineering.

Furthermore, the Professor of Practice will engage in other responsibilities that contribute to the Department and/or College, for example: advising students, advising projects or project teams, assisting students in entrepreneurial activities, or building intellectual infrastructure such as the development of applications-oriented degree programs and new industry-facing institutes. External visibility and impact are expected.

The Professor of Practice is expected to have a technical background. A Ph.D. in an engineering or related scientific or technical field is strongly preferred, but candidates with a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate STEM field plus advanced degrees in business or related fields may be considered based on experience. Professors of Practice at Cornell are non-tenure track and typically hold renewable appointments of three to five years.

Applicants should submit a cover letter; a curriculum vitae (CV); a brief (max. 1-2 pages) statement addressing their experience and skills and their potential application in an academic environment; and a statement describing their approach to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion (described below). Candidates may optionally include copies of publications, descriptions of programs or training materials they have developed, and any other relevant materials. The names and contact information of up to three references may be requested at a later date.

The MSE Department and the College of Engineering at Cornell embrace diversity and seek candidates who will create a climate that attracts and is inclusive of people of all races, nationalities and genders. People from historically underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. We are a recognized employer and educator valuing AA/EEO, Protected Veterans and Individuals with Disabilities. The required diversity statement should describe the candidate’s potential contributions to diversity and inclusion and should parallel the statement expected of applicants to tenure-track positions detailed in the University’s Contribution to Diversity statement

The above application materials should be submitted online at: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/23640

Applications will be reviewed starting immediately and will be accepted until the position is filled. Inquiries about your application may be directed to mse-pop-search@cornell.edu.
