$99,700 - $196,100

What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Welding Engineer to be a go-to Subject Matter Expert for welding processes, metal joining, design, and applications for critical national security products as well as conduct applied research in process science and engineering, with a focus on welding technologies, such as laser and resistance welding. This role will provide opportunities for broadening your technical capabilities through a challenging, high-profile research and engineering support program!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop welding specifications in support of numerous projects across the laboratories and with production vendors.

  • Perform technical program development and management duties.

  • Support engineering applications.

  • Write technical papers and reports.

  • Present results at program meetings and professional conferences.

  • Conduct short term problem solving and failure analysis, in support of customer needs.

  • Travel 1 to 2 times per month to vendor and manufacturing supplier.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science plus 3 years’ experience

  • Experience with welding engineering design and design for manufacturing concepts as well as technical specifications

  • Experience with applied research related to the relationships between material processing and resulting material behaviors

  • Experience with production and manufacturing

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with customer support skills, to include identifying and meeting customer needs

  • Experience with laser welding processes

  • Experience with joining technologies such as other welding processes, soldering, or brazing and related physical metallurgy concepts

  • Project management and development experience

  • Experience with materials characterization techniques

  • Experience with process control concepts and techniques

  • Publication and presentation record

  • Knowledge and experience with welding engineering design concepts and technical specifications

About Our Team:

The Thermal Spray and Welding Department (1834) is the principal organization for thermal spray and metal joining research and engineering support throughout the Laboratories. Expertise covers a broad range of experimental and predictive capabilities that apply fundamental process, physical and mechanical metallurgy principles. Specific technical areas include welding and soldering, special brazing and diffusion bonding, and mechanical behavior. The scientific focus is on materials structures, properties, performance and reliability. Staff supports a variety of national security programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
