Position Summary:
The Development Scientist in Paper is a critical R&D scientist working on Buckman’s Global Growth Strategies by accelerating the development of new products and performing predictive laboratory performance testing and evaluation for pulp related chemistries. . The resource will be positioned to maintain existing projects and accelerate the development of new capabilities in BSW defoamers, digester additives, and drive the development of new digital capabilities to support current and future new products.
This position will be application and formulation focused and will be expected to deliver new, differentiated technologies that grow Buckman's market share in pulp related markets.
Competencies Needed for Success:
• Demonstrated excellence in laboratory safety practices and compliance
• Hands on experience formulating and scaling up defoamer based technologies; Strong formulation and emulsion chemistry knowledge
• Must have experience and knowledge of pulp applications and product performance characterization, e.g. application testing knowledge and instrumentation
• Successfully have developed and supported new products for pulp markets
• Experience supporting product scale-up, manufacturing, and product trials
• Planning, preparing and executing design of experiments and project plans
• Pulp and BSW defoamer application testing knowledge and instrumentation
• Versatile skills that bridge hardware, software and chemistry to create innovative solutions
• A thorough understanding of scientific methodology and working understanding of laboratory operations, laboratory instrumentation, and laboratory methods is required
• Track record of new product development from concept to commercialization
• Experienced in operation and maintenance of analytical and application testing instruments
• Must have good communication skills, both written and verbal, and can work independently and on multidisciplinary teams
Minimum Requirements to Apply:
- Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Applied Surfactant Science, Colloid or Physical Chemistry with 2+ years of experience in relevant industry, or M. S. degree with 5+ years of experience in relevant industry.
- A secondary degree in applied Pulp/Paper Science with primary degree in chemical related field would be considered.
- Direct experience and knowledge in pulp related platform chemistries and defoamers is highly desired.
- Experience with emulsions and direct scale-up is required.
