Job Details
The Amherst College Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full-time, two-year visiting appointment in organic chemistry, beginning July 1, 2023. The position is open rank.
Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country. Nearly half of our
students identify as domestic students of color, and another 11 percent are international, with non-U.S. citizenship; 16 percent are the first members of their families to attend college. Amherst is committed to providing financial aid that meets 100 percent of every student’s demonstrated need, and nearly 60 percent of our students receive financial aid. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual identity, disability/ability, and religion. Located in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts, Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and with the University of Massachusetts in the Five College Consortium.
The position requires a Ph.D. in chemistry. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of organic chemistry at the undergraduate level (including lectures, discussion sections, and laboratories) and will fully engage with ongoing departmental efforts in developing new methods of inclusive pedagogy. Although there is no expectation for independent research, opportunities for engagement with existing, ongoing research programs in the department are available. Applicants with expertise in any sub-discipline of organic chemistry are encouraged to apply. Information on Amherst’s chemistry department may be found at: https://www.amherst.edu/academiclife/departments/chemistry.
To apply, applicants should submit electronically to https://apply.interfolio.com/123774 a cover letter; a curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching philosophy, including philosophy of teaching a diverse student body; and the contact information for three confidential references. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Professor David E. Hansen at dehansen@amherst.edu.
Amherst College is an equal opportunity employer and encourages persons of all genders, persons of color, and persons with disabilities to apply. The college is committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff.
