Laboratory Manager, Chemical and Environmental Analysis Facility

 

The Chemical and Environmental Analysis Facility in the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St Louis is pleased to invite applications for the position of Laboratory Manager. This full-time appointment will ideally commence in July or August 2023.

 

The Chemical and Environmental Analysis Facility is seeking a Laboratory Manager to work in a dynamic, stimulating environment in an educational institution. The successful candidate should be self-motivated, able to expand the facilities user base on an ongoing basis, capable of building robust methods to enhance the performance of the facility and committed to continuous improvement of the facilities. He or she must have excellent organizational and communication skills as well as experience managing an analytical or environmental research laboratory.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Planning, organizing, and/or controlling all aspects of instrumentation instrument use, operation, and upkeep. 
  • Promote the safe and effective operation of the facility.
  • Facility marketing and user base engagement and expansion. 
  • Support and respond to instrument user needs, including method development. 
  • Facilitate user training. 
  • Design, acquire, and conduct data analysis/interpretation with users.   
  • Develop/modify laboratory safety regulations and practice, ensuring compliance. 
  • Develop and write collaborative research and federal grants. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned and oversee the technician. 

Preferred Education/Experience

 

  • PhD with experience in lab operations or equivalent combination of education and experience equaling four years. 
  • Demonstrated ability to operate/maintain a wide range of analytical equipment and instruments. 
  • Education in chemistry, chemical engineering, or environmental engineering with a background in the operation of analytical instrumentation. 
  • Team player with a high level of initiative and motivation; ability to work both independently and lead a team. 
  • Ability to develop industrial contracts or federal grants, engage the scientific community and market the facility, and develop analytical methods.   ​
  • A strong background in analytical instrumentation and chemistry is essential.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to organize multiple tasks and frequent deadlines in parallel.
  • Ability to communicate in oral and written form with all levels of personnel.
