Essential Job Duties

The Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University is seeking candidates for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with interest and experience in Biomaterials Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. The position is a 9-month appointment with Research (45%), Teaching (45%), and Service (10%) responsibilities. The successful candidate is expected to teach core classes in one of the largest and most successful paper science and engineering programs in the world. The candidate is also expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program in the areas of biomass characterization, biomass conversion, biorefinery process and product development, value-added biobased products and the sustainable bioeconomy.

This position is envisioned to be someone with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or closely aligned engineering field, who can teach in the ABET accredited Paper Science and Engineering program. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in some aspects of the following with the biomass characterization, conversion, and creation of value-added biobased products; chemical processes for conversion of biomass into pulp and paper products, materials or bioenergy products. The successful candidate should have an interest in working with industrial partners.

Minimum Education and Experience

Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or closely related field.

Other Required Qualifications

  • A strong commitment to academic and research excellence. Ability to teach courses in pulping process (e.g., pulping, bleaching, and chemical recovery) or biomaterials chemistry at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. Potential to attract and secure funding for proposed scholarly work from federal agencies and other sources. Ability to cultivate the professional development of graduate students through effective mentoring of scholarly work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in pulp and paper manufacturing, biomass processing, and/or bio-based product development. A track record of scholarship, publications, and securing grant funding for fundamental or applied research in traditional pulping operation and biobased product development. Proven experience in communicating effectively visually, verbally, and in writing.
