Toxicology Lab Manager/Sr Analytical Chemist

Budgeted Salary Range: Initial placement will be between $81, 000 – $120,800/Annual, commensurate with educational background and relevant working experience.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.

 

Under direction of the Section Head, 1) manage and oversee the CAHFS Toxicology Section; 2) manage federal grants including assuring that grant objectives are met, overseeing budgets and preparing reports as required, 3) manage support for CDFA’s Commercial Feed Regulatory Program, 4) operate, maintain and replace sophisticated analytical equipment including gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and atomic absorption and emission spectrometry, 5) maintain personnel training programs and 6) adapt available resources to solve new and emerging problems. All of these responsibilities are undertaken in collaboration with the Section Head.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

• Master’s degree in chemistry or equivalent combined education and experience.

• Formal supervisory experience.  Experience in providing effective leadership for laboratory management and supervision of technical staff in a high-production analytical laboratory including prioritizing workload and scheduling personnel to meet deadlines.

• Experience with quality control and quality assurance in a laboratory that utilizes complex methodology.

• Demonstrated background working in a high-production analytical laboratory utilizing high-complexity mass spectrometry instrumentation and skills to maximize the operation and performance of diverse analytical platforms.

• Skills to effectively recruit, hire, train, and evaluate work performance of personnel. Independent thinking, strong decision-making and problem-solving skills to evaluate and solve problems and/or make sound recommendations.

• Demonstrated excellent written, oral, communication and interpersonal skills to effectively manage and interact with staff and co-workers and provide customer service to clients of the CAHFS.

 

Preferred:

PhD in analytical chemistry or related field. 

• Experience working in a fast-paced, high throughput diagnostic laboratory providing both organic and inorganic analytical chemistry services.  Knowledge of laboratory chain-of-custody requirements.

• Experience writing scientific publications and grant proposals and presenting scientific information to diverse audiences.

• Experience in managing federal grants including grant applications, renewals, and budgeting.
