What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Microelectronic/Semiconductor Technologist with a specialty in microelectronics or microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication. The candidate will work in Sandia’s MESA fabrication facilities and the Center for Integrated Nano Technologies (CINT) to develop and execute device fabrication processes and to diagnose problems for a variety of sensors, MEMS, and microsystems. Government agencies such as DARPA, IARPA, and the Department of Defense, as well as commercial partners ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies turn to us to develop next-generation technologies to solve critical national security and commercial challenges. Our close-knit, interdisciplinary team of biologists, physicists, chemists, engineers, material scientists, and computer scientists produces dozens of patents, research talks, and publications each year. This wide variety of R&D interests and customers provides the team with a dynamic and engaging project environment. We need a detail-oriented, dedicated person to bring our device designs into reality and help solve our customer challenges.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Pattern photoresist for SNL-developed micro gas chromatography columns used in cutting-edge medical diagnostic systems that perform warfighter state of health monitoring

  • CVD deposit oxide films on novel micro-resonator devices for a portable sensor system to protect military or civilian personnel from emerging chemical or biological weapon threats

  • Help develop fabrication process flows to produce high temperature catalytic sensors to measure greenhouse gases from a stratospheric balloon

  • Deposit thin-film metal electrode structures for a sensor node that will be carried onboard an Air Force micro unmanned aerial vehicle searching for a target chemical plume

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite 100% of the time at the Albuquerque, NM campus.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Associate's degree in a science or engineering field, or equivalent combination of education and experience (such as high school diploma plus 4 years relevant experience)

  • Experience with at least one of the following:

  • nano- or micro-scale fabrication processes

  • tooling such as photolithography, thin film metallization, oxidation furnaces, etc.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience with microelectronics or microsystems realization including circuit design, mask layout, testing, and documentation

  • Record of publication and innovation evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, or issued patents

  • Demonstrated execution of R&D activities, including project planning, execution, and reporting

  • Experience with laboratory test and measurement of analog or RF components using tools such as high-speed oscilloscopes, network analyzers, parameter analyzers, and on-wafer probe stations

  • Familiarity with heterogeneous integration and microscale packaging techniques as well as approaches for microsystem rapid prototyping and integration

  • Strong self-motivation to work effectively as an independent contributor to a larger team

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills as needed to work successfully in a team environment

About Our Team:

The Biological and Chemical Sensors Department at Sandia National Laboratories specializes in miniature sensors and sensor-based systems for detection of chemical, physical, and biological targets. These sensors and systems can be built into wearable, handheld, UAV, or fixed/installed formats. We have a strong emphasis on nano, micro, and mesoscale fabrication in our R&D including the capability to integrate custom electronics developed in Sandia’s MESA facility. We widely collaborate with researchers from across the academic, government, and commercial spaces. Our close-knit, interdisciplinary team consists of both experienced and early career individuals interested in pushing the state of the art and solving unique detection challenges.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
