What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a dynamic R&D Manager (job title: Manager, R&D Science and E MG) to lead and manage Sandia National Laboratories’ Biosecurity and Bioassurance Department. The Department is a diverse research group with work encompassing both basic and applied biological research. We seek to address biological problems with strong ties to national security, including biodefense and health security, and climate and energy security. The department manager plays a leadership role in staff recruiting and development, performance management and personnel supervision, and creation and maintenance of research capabilities including physical laboratories and their safe operation. The manager will also work with staff, managers of peer departments and senior management to create strategic plans and develop new programs aligning with key government sponsors in the Biosecurity and Bioassurance space.
On any given day, you may be called on to:

Promote and support the professional development of staff, assessing their performance, coordinating work assignments, providing recognition, and resolving issues

Promote a culture that values diversity and inclusion

Coordinate recruitment, selection, hiring, and training of new staff

Manage projects and lab-work within Sandia and with external partners in particular other NNSA labs

Maintain a safe, secure, creative, and productive work environment and be responsible for the safe operation of biology laboratories

Establish strategies to apply the latest biological advances to mission needs in national security, public health, energy security and environmental security
-
Participate with leadership to plan and evaluate strategy and operations
-
Work with staff and management to develop new programs and identify new internal and external sponsors whilst maintaining the existing sponsor base

Develop and sustain partnerships with within Sandia and with universities, other laboratories, and industry
Qualifications We Require:
-
PhD in Biological Sciences, Chemical or Physical Sciences, or Engineering with at least 5 years’ post-PhD research experience in a relevant field; or Master’s in Biological Sciences, Chemical or Physical Sciences, or Engineering with at least 9 years of research experience in relevant field

Record of strong technical contributions and excellent verbal and written communication skills, as proven by peer-reviewed publications and/or conference presentations

Demonstrated ability to build and support strong interdisciplinary teams and partnerships across organizational boundaries
-
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:

Two years of demonstrated leadership experience

Experience with personnel management, hiring and retaining talented staff, and building diverse multidisciplinary teams and passion for motivating, coaching, and mentoring staff

Expertise in cutting-edge biotechnology

Experience with designing, maintaining, or operating modern biological laboratories including working with facilities personnel for upgrades and experience with capital equipment planning and acquisition

Familiarity with the DOE Integrated Safety Management System or similar safety systems, and experience managing or providing oversight for members of the workforce who perform safety-critical work e.g. operation or oversight of BSL-2 or BSL-3 laboratories

Biology program development experience and previous sponsor interactions with DOE, DHS, DHHS, and/or DOD
About Our Team:
The Sandia Biosecurity and Bioassurance Department, located in Livermore, California, develops solutions for national security problems using innovative research approaches in predictive biology, bioinformatics, synthetic biology and incorporating advanced technology development in ‘omics. We seek to develop the knowledge and technologies needed to assure biosecurity, and safe and secure biomanufacturing to produce clean, efficient, and cost-effective biofuels and bioproducts on a commercial scale. Our department is part of the highly multidisciplinary Applied Biosciences and Engineering Group, comprised of researchers with expertise in many disciplines of biology (molecular biology, microbiology, virology, immunology, and biochemistry), chemistry (analytical, organic, and physical), computational science (bioinformatics, machine learning, and computational chemistry), and engineering (chemical, mechanical, and biomedical).
Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
