STETSON UNIVERSITY

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

POSITION: Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Stetson University seeks applicants for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Chemistry. This is a full-time, nine-month position, beginning in August 2024.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in an area of chemistry broadly defined as analytical chemistry (analytical sub-disciplines such as forensics, bioanalysis, environmental analysis, and clinical analysis are also acceptable). A record of scholarly publication in an appropriate area of expertise is expected. Post-doctoral research experience and teaching experience beyond typical teaching assistant duties in graduate school are preferred but not required. Candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Stetson focuses on education of the whole student through a strong foundation in General Education, deep disciplinary training, and experiential learning. Thus, this tenure-track faculty position has a strong focus on teaching, advising, and mentoring of undergraduate research. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers American Chemical Society (ACS) certified degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, and supports students interested in careers in the health sciences, attending graduate school, or entering the workforce after graduation. In addition to teaching established chemistry courses and labs, the successful candidate will be willing to develop new courses suitable for general education designation, including courses that may become part of the University’s First Year Seminar or Junior Seminar program. Stetson tenure-track faculty usually teach three unit courses each semester. For this appointment, the teaching load would typically include an introductory, foundational, or advanced course in chemistry with an accompanying lab, and an additional general education or advanced course in the candidate’s specialization with an accompanying lab. As teacher-scholars, candidates will be expected to be excellent teachers and pursue a vibrant research program. The candidate will also provide academic advising for undergraduates each semester. University service and or leadership are also expected commensurate with rank.

For more information on our expectations in teaching and scholarship and our support for faculty development, please see the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs website: http://www.stetson.edu/provost.

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Stetson (https://www.stetson.edu/artsci/chemistry/) is accredited by the ACS and currently consists of seven full-time faculty members with areas of expertise in analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. The department has a long history of successfully placing students in reputable graduate programs, as well as directly into the workforce. Faculty in the department are committed to the teacher-scholar model, which involves teaching within a liberal arts environment where the primary focus is extensive interaction with undergraduate students in a small class setting, while also maintaining an active scholarly agenda. Our faculty work alongside other natural science colleagues in the departments of biology, health sciences, environmental science and studies, and physics, sharing a 22,000 square-foot Sage Science Facility and the newly opened 44,000 square-foot Brown Hall Center for Health and Innovation.

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES:

Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (http://www.stetson.edu/portal/artsci/) is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts. With nineteen academic departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University. A great strength of the College is its faculty of approximately 150 full-time teacher-scholars. The College offers 38 undergraduate majors and 40 undergraduate minors; seven graduate degrees are offered in Education, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing. Every undergraduate major requires a senior research project, giving students the opportunity to design and carry out independent research under faculty mentorship. Our academic programs are shaped by the values of social justice and civic responsibility. All of our courses and programs of study promote engaged learning, whereby students create connections between the classroom or lab and the local, regional, and global community. The academic programs of the College of Arts and Sciences prepare students to live significant lives, to interact with and positively affect the world around them.

Stetson University College of Law, Florida’s first law school, moved from the main campus to Gulfport in 1954, and, with the addition of the Tampa Law Center, serves approximately 1,000 students working full-time or part-time toward J.D. or LL.M. degrees. The University’s graduate programs include Business, Accounting, Education, Counseling, and Creative Writing.
