Location: Charlottesville, VA
Open Date: Sep 08, 2023

Description:
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia is delighted to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the field of bioanalytical chemistry, with a focus on potential or ongoing applications of the analytical methods to neuroscience or the brain. This new colleague will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary research and teaching community in the Department of Chemistry and the UVA Brain Institute, with a start date on or after August, 2024.  In this role, they will establish a dynamic, independently-funded research program in the bioanalytical sciences while mentoring students and contributing to graduate and undergraduate educational missions and departmental culture.  Areas that would complement current expertise in the Chemistry department may include, but are not limited to, spatially resolved or imaging-based analytical methods or sensors, biomolecular analysis, -omics analyses, mass spectrometry, microscale analysis, or integration with data science.  Neuroscience applications may include fundamental neuroscience or neuroscience related fields, including neuro-oncology, neuro-immunology, development, or others.

We offer a collegial and supportive environment with a strong record of supporting, mentoring, and championing new and junior faculty.  This new faculty member in Chemistry will be part of a cohort of more than 20 strategic faculty hires made over several years and across the university in the area of the Brain and Neuroscience. The new cohort is a keystone of a $75 million investment into research in neuroscience through the University's Grand Challenge Research Initiatives, which includes investments in research infrastructure, and data analytics. There are many opportunities for collaboration and funding within and between the School of Arts & Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and School of Data Science.  In addition to the Neuroscience community, candidates may also be interested in synergies with UVA centers of excellence such as the NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Carter Immunology Center, Brain Immune Glia Center, NanoSTAR Institute for Nanomedicine, Global Infectious Disease Institute, Center for Membrane Biology, Keck Imaging Center, and/or Berne Cardiovascular Research Center among others. Furthermore, a range of networking and development opportunities is available to ensure that scholars from underrepresented groups in science and engineering thrive at UVA.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field at the time of appointment, a strong record of innovative research, and a commitment to high-quality teaching and mentoring of students from a diversity of backgrounds at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
