University of Rochester Department Chair in Chemical Engineering

Applications are sought for the tenured position of Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Rochester. Qualified candidates are expected to have earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering or related discipline; a strong record of scholarly activity, publication, and externally funded research; a commitment to excellence in teaching; strong leadership and communication skills; and the ability to mentor a diverse group of colleagues. Tenure upon appointment for qualified senior candidates may be granted, contingent on favorable review of the candidate’s dossier by the department, the dean of (school), and the provost.

The University of Rochester (UR) is a private, doctoral research university (R1) located in upstate New York, a region famous for its diverse cultural, educational, and recreational opportunities. The university offers the opportunity to contribute to an exceptionally rich and highly collaborative research environment. The Hajim School of Engineering encompasses six academic departments. The university is home to multidisciplinary research organizations including the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Goergen Institute for Data Science, the Materials Science Program, and the Laboratory for Laser Energetics.

Founded in 1915, the Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the oldest chemical engineering departments in the country, and contributions from Rochester faculty, students, and alumni have had global impact on the profession. The following criteria will be used for the search:

  • Administrative and leadership experience in building and executing educational programs and research initiatives; broad experience in recruiting, supervising, and mentoring of academic faculty and staff.
  • Exceptional record of research and scholarship that is synergistic with the Department’s and the University’s research strengths.
  • A vision for leadership in research, scholarship, and education for the Chemical Engineering Department at UR.

The Department Chair will have general administrative authority over department affairs, exercise leadership in the formulation of policies, introduce educational ideas and proposals, and stimulate discussions leading to improvement of educational and research programs. Responsibilities include both strengthening the department and its programs as well as advocating for the Department across the Hajim School of Engineering and across the University.  Furthermore, the Department Chair will engage with internal and external stakeholders including UR leadership, alumni, corporate partners, and philanthropic donors to maximize visibility and impact. The department is deeply committed to diversity; and the Chair should continue to foster diversity of department constituents.

The referenced pay range represents the full 9-month base range of pay for this job. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
