The Department of Chemistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks candidates for a full-time, non-tenure-track position at the anticipated rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.  The successful applicant will coordinate the organic chemistry curriculum, teach organic chemistry I and II lectures, and may also contribute to upper division courses.

We seek applicants who have previously demonstrated a commitment to teaching excellence in organic chemistry. This position is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure earning, career-track appointment.  Duties include:

• Teaching at least two lecture sections of organic chemistry per semester. Ensuring uniform curricular coverage across sections while encouraging individualized instruction. Coordinating the administrative operation of the undergraduate organic chemistry recitations, including the main service courses, as well as the courses serving the Honors College students and chemistry majors.  These courses serve more than 500 students per semester.  Development of course materials as it pertains to peer-instruction in recitation, including materials to facilitate student learning. Training, scheduling, and supervising of organic chemistry teaching assistants.  Overseeing the scheduling of organic chemistry lectures and recitation sections. Curricular development in chemical education Collaboration with department organic chemistry faculty to ensure a comprehensive undergraduate organic experience is offered.

Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry with a strong background in organic chemistry, chemical education with an emphasis on organic chemistry, or a closely related discipline. The UAB Chemistry Department offers B.S. (ACS-Approved), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and has major research interests in drug discovery, organic synthesis, structural biochemistry, radiochemistry, biophysical chemistry, nanoscience, and polymer/advanced materials.  UAB is dedicating significant resources towards its science infrastructure in the next few years, with Phase I of a new Science and Engineering Complex (S&EC) opening in Fall 2023. Phase I of the S&EC includes newly designed organic chemistry teaching laboratories.  A future phase of the S&EC will include a new wing that will house the remainder of the Chemistry Department.
