Job Details

Amherst College, Lecturer in Organic Chemistry

The Amherst College Department of Chemistry ( invites applications for a full-time lecturer in organic chemistry beginning July 1, 2024.  Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country.  Nearly half of our students identify as domestic students of color, and another 11 percent are international, with non-U.S. citizenship; 16 percent are the first members of their families to attend college. Amherst is committed to providing financial aid that meets 100 percent of every student’s demonstrated need, and nearly 60 percent of our students receive financial aid. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual identity, and religion.

The position requires a Ph.D. in chemistry and calls for teaching organic chemistry at the undergraduate level.  Opportunities for teaching electives and interdisciplinary courses are also available.  This is a purely instructional position and carries the equivalent of a three/three course load, which includes lecturing, the teaching of laboratory and discussion sections, and holding office hours. Applicants with expertise in any sub-discipline of organic chemistry are encouraged to apply, as are applicants with all levels of experience. Salary will be commensurate with prior experience.

Applicants should submit electronically to: a cover letter; a curriculum vita; a statement of teaching philosophy, including philosophy of teaching a diverse student body; and the contact information for three confidential references. Review of applications will begin December 4, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to David E. Hansen, Julian H. Gibbs 1946 Professor of Chemistry,

Amherst College is an equal opportunity employer and encourages persons of all genders, persons of color, and persons with disabilities to apply. The college is committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff.
