Our team is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct experimental electrochemical materials science R&D for energy storage research, particularly in the fields of sodium batteries and/or flow batteries. If you are passionate about research in these areas, consider this opportunity to become part of our team. On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Contribute to a multidisciplinary, materials-focused research effort

  • Assemble and test sodium batteries and/or flow batteries

  • Coordinate, perform, and/or analyze data from materials characterization

  • Publish innovative research in leading peer-reviewed technical journals

  • Present cutting-edge research at technical conferences

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant(s) must be able to work onsite.


  • Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in a chemistry, materials, physics or engineering-related field (PhD must be conferred within five years prior to employment)

  • Laboratory experience in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, or battery testing

  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance


  • Experience with various electrochemical techniques (CV, EIS, GITT, galvanostatic cycling, etc.)

  • Strong background in electrochemical materials characterization, including battery testing and evaluation, ideally related to sodium, lithium, or similar batteries

  • Familiarity with flow batteries, their components, and cell assembly

  • Familiarity with materials characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and electron microscopy (SEM/EDS, etc)

  • Experience developing new electrochemical test fixtures or apparatus to improve battery performance or elucidate materials limitations

  • Experience using and maintaining an inert atmosphere glovebox

  • Ability to interact with team members of diverse technical backgrounds

  • Desire to conduct independent, focused research

  • Candidates should be highly motivated, team-oriented individuals


The Nanoscale Sciences Department 1874 conducts collaborative groundbreaking research to advance the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enable the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings.

Our main work focuses on the discovery, understanding, and exploitation of properties and structures unique to the micro- and nanoscale, broadly directed along three thrusts:

  • Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (e.g., energy storage, corrosion, chemical sensing);

  • Electronic Materials Science and Applications (e.g., carbon nanotubes, granular metals)

  • Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (e.g., hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, catalysis)

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
