The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Plant Polymer Research Unit (PPL) at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research (NCAUR), Peoria, IL is seeking a Research Chemist (Research Associate). The Unit’s mission is to develop new bio-based products from agricultural specialty crops or commodities that are cost- and performance-competitive. The incumbent will be expected to apply knowledge and skills related to physical and chemical sciences to support the creation of value-added products from plant-derived polymers. Laboratory experiments will be conducted to develop structure-process-property relationships for material compositions fully or partially based on plant-derived polymers, such starch, cellulose, and/or lignin. Innovative material concepts for the utilization of plant-derived polymers for potential application in a variety of end-use markets will be tested at laboratory scale and the data generated used for preparing patent disclosures, manuscripts for journal publications, and conference presentations. Incumbent will be expected to collaborate with other scientists and technicians to accomplish research tasks and effectively utilize organization resources.
