Position Summary

The Chemistry & Biochemistry Department in the College of Engineering & Science at the University of Detroit Mercy invites candidates to apply for an available full-time tenure track faculty position at the assistant or associate level with a focus on Chemistry Education Research. The hired candidate will start August 16, 2024. We are particularly interested in candidates who will contribute to our efforts to provide support and opportunities for historically minoritized students majoring in science disciplines. The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is an integral part of the College's National Institutes of Health's https://eng-sci.udmercy.edu/research/rebuildetroit.php & https://eng-sci.udmercy.edu/research/urise/index.php grants that support these efforts.

The Department at Detroit Mercy is a dynamic department whose 12 full-time faculty teach courses required for students majoring in chemistry and biochemistry; engage in interdisciplinary and collaborative teaching and research; and mentor students. The Department serves approximately 100 undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry majors as well as biology, engineering, nursing, and dental hygiene majors. The faculty at the department have opportunities to collaborate with faculty in other disciplines. A successful candidate would be one that has a strong interest in implementing best practices in pedagogy including evidence-based teaching and assessment strategies. In addition, we seek an educator who is an enthusiastic teacher-scholar committed to supporting a diverse population of students, and who can enrich and contribute to the College's multifaceted diversity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate lectures and laboratory courses, based on the faculty member's area of expertise and on the need to complement or expand current offerings in the Department. The candidate should have a proposed research agenda appropriate for a primarily undergraduate institution. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability and interest to pursue external funding and to disseminate results in peer-reviewed publications and conferences.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctoral or terminal degree in Chemistry or Chemical Education or closely related discipline by the time of appointment.
• Experience teaching courses in college or relevant instructional experience.
• Commitment to innovative, evidence-based teaching strategies that enhance student learning outcomes.
• Experience with research and scholarly activity and demonstrated ability to carry out research with undergraduate students.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commitment to students' holistic development, including encouraging students to re?ect and engage with chemistry in a broader social context.
• Evidence indicating promise of service to the department, college, university, and community in alignment with the mission of the university.
• Commitment to student-centered mentoring and advising.

Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).

Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
