The Chemistry Department at The College of Wooster invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry to begin in August 2024. The position is renewable for a total of three years pending a positive teaching performance in 2024-2025. We are looking for a broadly trained chemist with a commitment to teaching excellence. The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment. Primary responsibilities include teaching general chemistry courses and laboratories within one’s specialization, with additional possible teaching opportunities in the chemistry curriculum and in mentoring undergraduates within Wooster’s nationally-recognized Senior Independent Study research program.
The College of Wooster is an independent college of the liberal arts and sciences with a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. We enroll a racially, socioeconomically, and culturally diverse student population of approximately 1,960 undergraduate students, of which 6% identify as Latinx, 10% as Black/African American, 4% as Asian, 4% as multiracial, and 60% as white. Fifteen percent (15%) of our students are studying on international visas. Twenty-five percent (25%) are Pell-eligible, and 12% are first-generation college students. We are interested in hiring faculty who can contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the community through culturally relevant pedagogy, curricular diversity, intercultural fluency, and a commitment to ensuring equitable outcomes for racially and ethnically minoritized and marginalized student groups.
The Department of Chemistry has eight full-time faculty members and graduates approximately 15-20 majors annually, many of whom pursue advanced study and/or careers in chemistry. The department is housed in a modern teaching/research space that was renovated and expanded in 2018 to integrate with our life sciences facilities. Department instrumentation accessible for use in student-mentored research includes a modern 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, a liquid chromatography high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (LC-QTOF-MS), and a liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC-QqQ-MS), among other laboratory facilities. For more information, see https://wooster.edu/area/chemistry/.
To apply, submit a cover letter; curriculum vitae; a one-page teaching philosophy statement; a research description of potential projects for mentoring undergraduate student research at Wooster (up to 3 pages); unofficial graduate transcripts; two letters of recommendation; a statement (1-2 pages) on your contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion including information about your understanding of these issues, your record of activities to date, and your specific plans and goals for advancing these efforts as a College of Wooster faculty member. All materials should be submitted through Interfolio: http://apply.interfolio.com/139968.
Review of applications will begin March 11 and will continue until the position is filled.
