Purpose:

We are seeking a R&D Associate Staff Member to advance science and technology in the areas of electrochemical energy storage including advanced synchrotron characterization, materials synthesis, and electrochemical characterization among other battery R&D duties.  Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, technical skills, and education. You will be expected to develop and execute research projects on battery materials synthesis and advanced characterization.

These research areas are aligned with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Vehicle Technologies and other DOE programs.

This R&D Associate position is in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division, and research will primarily be conducted at ORNL’s Grid Research, Integration & Deployment Center (GRID-C). You will collaborate with staff across ORNL and will be expected to communicate at conferences and project review meetings and interface with scientists at other national labs, industry, and universities.

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on the advanced characterization of battery materials and systems

  • Carry out research on the synthesis of battery materials

  • Conduct research on electrode fabrication and development of pouch cells

  • Conduct research on thorough electrochemical testing of battery systems

  • Write, develop, and review technical products such as proposals, publications, and artifacts to ensure high quality and consistency with ORNL standards

  • Ensure safe, collegial, and collaborative workplace

  • Network and develop collaboration with other groups and divisions internally at ORNL and with other national labs and industry

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, or related discipline

  • Demonstrated record of technical accomplishments in:

    • advanced characterization that includes synchrotron X-ray methods; 2) battery materials synthesis, electrode fabrication, and development of pouch-format cells; and 3) electrochemical characterization and performance evaluation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in lithium-ion and beyond lithium-ion chemistries as well as all solid-state batteries is highly desired.
