Job Summary
Reporting to the Chair of the Chemistry Department or designee, the Stockroom Manager is responsible for managing the chemistry stockroom and chemical inventory, for the preparation of the teaching laboratories and for teaching according to the needs of the Department. As an exempt, full time position, the Stockroom Manager has core work hours however, occasional flexibility may be required to accommodate special projects and/or class scheduling.
Job Duties
- 40% - Preparation of teaching labs and chemical solutions according to laboratory handouts and syllabus provided by the Teaching Laboratory Coordinator (TLC) and/or laboratory instructors. Assist as needed, the TLC and faculty in reviewing guidelines and preparation planning prior to semester’s start. This may involve attending weekly meetings with the TLC, laboratory instructors, and student teaching assistants. At times, and when available, train/supervise assigned student worker(s) to assist in the preparation of assigned labs. - (Essential)
- 20% - Coordinate with the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) for laboratory waste management, including: issuing waste labels and solid waste bags; managing waste for teaching labs (providing waste containers, labels and manifest forms, and arranging the removal of waste); checking waste manifest forms with research students before arranging the waste transportation to the satellite area with CHO. Maintain, clean, or sterilize laboratory instruments or equipment in the teaching labs, in addition to maintaining a clean and safe Stockroom environment. - (Essential)
- 15% - Assist student worker(s) at the stockroom windows with lab/research needs. Train, manage, and supervise student laboratory prep assistant(s) and stockroom student worker(s), including work schedules assignment, online bi-weekly timesheets approval with departmental coordinator if necessary. - (Essential)
- 15% - Addition of the received chemicals for the research labs to the inventory system. Monitor product quality to ensure compliance with standards and specifications. Maintain the chemical inventory for teaching lab materials. This includes providing barcodes to the newly purchased chemicals and deleting the inventory info once the chemical bottles become empty after use. Prepare annual bid for teaching lab materials and supplies. - (Essential)
- 10% - Monitor the chemical stockroom and departmental supplies. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested including but not limited to providing other assistance to chemistry faculty in relation to the chemistry teaching/laboratory/research curriculum as needed. - (Marginal)
- Teach a maximum of 1.5 courses in the Department each semester according to the needs, with each lecture course counting as (1) teaching unit, and each laboratory course counting as (1/2) teaching unit. Supplemental compensation will be given for that task. - (Marginal)
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in chemistry or related field.
- Three (3) years of laboratory management, following protocols and preparation of teaching or related laboratory activity.
- Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
- Demonstrated knowledge to analyze and the ability to create chemical compounds or substances.
- Skill and attention to detail in compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data.
- Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
- Demonstrated skills in working in a team environment in support of faculty and students.
- Demonstrated service orientation exhibiting a customer friendly demeanor with internal and external customers including faculty, students, and staff; vendors and other external service/supply professionals.
- Demonstrated ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with self-directed initiative while exercising sound judgment in problem identification, solution generation with both collaborative and/or independent decision-making. Skills in analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
- Ability to be resourceful and creative in the development and presentation of various options in the fulfillment of assigned job responsibilities in order to meet workplace goals and objectives.
- Demonstrated effective and efficient communication skills in various mediums - oral, written and electronic.
- Skill in presenting ideas effectively, conveying thoughts clearly and concisely. Listens well and asks appropriate questions. Gives full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

- PhD’s degree in chemistry or related field.
EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $70,000 - $77,000/yr
If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
