Job Details
Haverford College invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Chemistry to begin Fall 2025, in the area of experimental chemistry, broadly defined.
Haverford College seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in experimental chemistry, broadly defined. We are seeking a candidate whose research area(s) and teaching interests complement the current expertise in the department. The College and Department are committed to building and supporting a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students. Hence, we encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented groups and/or those who have experience supporting diverse student populations in their classrooms and labs.
Haverford College is a research-intensive undergraduate institution, and faculty in the Department of Chemistry (https://www.haverford.edu/chemistry) conduct exciting, high-impact scholarly work alongside their undergraduate collaborators. Haverford College’s long-standing commitment to social justice is reflected in the diversity, inclusion, and ethical engagement of our students, faculty, and staff.
Haverford is located on an arboretum just outside Philadelphia, enabling easy access to the Philadelphia International Airport and Amtrak. Additionally, there are over 16 colleges and universities with ACS-approved chemistry programs within 30 miles of the campus. Haverford College is part of a Tri-College Consortium with neighboring Swarthmore College and Bryn Mawr College, and is also part of the non-sectarian ‘Quaker Consortium,’ which includes the Tri-Colleges and the University of Pennsylvania, which facilitates particularly close connections with these institutions. Faculty can engage with these communities through collaborations, as well as shared resources and events. The Chemistry Department is located in the Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center along with the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Computer Science, Biology, Psychology, and Mathematics. Shared teaching and research supports include two instrument specialists, a purchasing agent, science librarian, UNIX support specialist, machinist, an instructional technology department, and a team of administrative assistants. The successful candidate will be encouraged to engage with our faculty mentoring program and Teaching and Learning Institute. These resources, as well as competitive start-up packages, reasonable teaching loads, and generous sabbatical leave policies, serve to support faculty success in both teaching and research. Qualifications
A completed Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field is required. At least one year (as of July 2025) of professional research experience beyond the Ph.D. is required; examples include, but are not limited to, academic postdoctoral research, work in industrial/government labs, and science education research. Successful applicants will be expected to pursue an active and externally funded research program that is inclusive to a diverse undergraduate student body, contribute to introductory and advanced levels of the chemistry curriculum, and add new advanced courses in their area(s) of expertise. Ability and interest in connecting to other College programs and interdisciplinary initiatives, such as environmental studies, health studies, neuroscience, or biochemistry/biophysics, visual studies, scientific computing, or other areas will be viewed positively. The appointment is at the rank of assistant professor.
