Job Details
The Department of Chemistry in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan is seeking applicants with a Ph.D. for a full-time new Lecturer III position. This is a non-tenure track position, with a University Year appointment period (i.e., runs September 1 through May 31 each year).
We anticipate this position will be full time (100%), and we anticipate it will begin May 6, 2025, although there is some flexibility and a start date of August 25, 2025, would also be possible. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer III in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three (3) courses per semester, or the equivalent in administrative and/or service duties.
The initial appointment period will be one (1) to four (4) years (depending on qualifications), and the appointment is renewable (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance).
The appointment is subject to final approval by the college.
Duties and responsibilities for this Lecturer III position will include teaching assignments in the Department of Chemistry. The initial course assignments for this position would be Chem130-General Chemistry: Macroscopic Investigations and Reaction Principles. However, in future years alternative courses taught may also include different laboratory courses: Chem 125/126-General Chem Lab I/II, Chem 211- Investigations in Chemistry, Chem 216-Synthesis and Characterization of Organic Compounds, Chem 352/353-Introductory Biochemistry Laboratory/Biochemistry Technical Writing, Chem 482 (Synthesis Lab), and Chem 483 (Advanced Physical Analysis Lab), as well as lecture courses in the Lecturer IIIs sub-field of expertise (e.g., Chem 210 – Structure and Reactivity I for someone with organic chemistry expertise). Additionally, the position would be expected to (a) participate in course and curriculum development, (b) do undergraduate advising, (c) assist with the coordination, training, and supervision of large (10-35) groups of GSIs in the introductory courses, (d) serve as course coordinators in multi- section courses that have multiple faculty instructors, (e) serve on appropriate Departmental, College, and University committees, and (f) enhance the visibility of our undergraduate program with publications, presentations, or other service-related activities on campus.
Qualified candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field. It is desirable that lecturers in Chemistry be able to teach in a number of different introductory-level courses, including labs and lectures that cover basic subject matter in the areas of General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Biochemistry. Additionally, qualified candidates should be fluent in their sub-field of expertise. Excellence in teaching and instructional service, and a strong commitment to educating a diverse group of students, will be the principal criteria for selecting the successful candidate. The successful candidate must meet all degree requirements prior to the start date of the position.
To apply, please submit the following materials through Interfolio by October 31, 2024, via Chemistry LEC III - Interfolio :

There may be some overlap with your teaching statement.
The anticipated application deadline is October 31, 2024, and we anticipate notifying candidates for on- campus interviews by December 16, 2024.
