The Skidmore College, ACS-approved Department of Chemistry invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in Fall 2025. The successful candidate will contribute to the growing diversity and excellence of the academic community through their inclusive teaching, scholarship, and service. Enthusiasm is essential for teaching, mentoring, and advising a diverse student population. 

Summary

The successful candidate will be expected to teach an average of 9 contact hours each semester using inclusive practices in our 100-level, organic, and upper-level elective courses as well as an occasional interdisciplinary first-year seminar (topic open); the candidate is also expected to advise students, participate in departmental and college service, and develop a vibrant research program with undergraduate collaborators emphasizing synthetic chemistry. Skidmore supports faculty in many ways, including through competitive start-up funds; pre-tenure research leaves; internal grants for collaborative research; a new faculty learning community; a Center for Leadership, Teaching, and Learning; funds to travel to present and for societal memberships; writing groups; and a course release in the first year. Education: A Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field with the expertise to teach organic is required, and postdoctoral experience is beneficial, although not required.

A complete application includes the following materials: (1) a cover letter that includes how you will effectively engage with a diverse student body as a teacher, advisor, and mentor; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) a statement of your research plans that also includes the role of undergraduates in your research project(s); how you plan to recruit & facilitate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive undergraduate research group; potential journals and conferences for publicizing your work; potential external sources of funding; and a list of major equipment needs; (4) a statement of teaching philosophy that explains how you will effectively engage students in the classroom and laboratory in an equitable and inclusive manner informed by your teaching experience and training, and suggested courses you are interested in teaching; (5) copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts as one PDF; (6) a statement on how you will contribute to strengthening an equitable and inclusive educational community; and (7) the names, affiliations, & contact information of three professional references.

Pay Rate: $75,000 - $85,000

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic discipline (faculty pay ranges reflect 9-month annual salary).
  • Unique applicable skills.
