Job Details
The Amherst College Department of Chemistry (https://www.amherst.edu/academiclife/departments/chemistry) invites applications for a full-time, open rank, eighteen-month visiting appointment in chemistry beginning January 1, 2025, and continuing through the end of the spring 2026 semester.
Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country. During the 2023–2024 academic year, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students were Pell Grant recipients, nearly half identified as domestic students of color, and 11 percent were international students, with non-U.S. citizenship; 16 percent were the first members of their families to attend college. Amherst is committed to providing financial aid that meets 100 percent of every student’s demonstrated need, and nearly 60 percent of our students receive financial aid. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse. The department and college are committed to increasing the diversity of our faculty and to helping all members of our community thrive. Located in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts, Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and with the University of Massachusetts in the Five College Consortium.
The position requires a Ph.D. in chemistry and the successful candidate will contribute, depending on the semester, to the teaching at the undergraduate level of general chemistry, upper-level physical chemistry lab, and/or organic chemistry discussion and lab. The visiting professor will be invited to engage fully with ongoing departmental efforts to develop new methods of inclusive pedagogy. Although there is no expectation for independent research for this position, opportunities for engagement with existing, ongoing research programs in the department are available. Applicants are asked to submit electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/153223 a cover letter; a curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching philosophy, including philosophy of teaching a diverse student body; and the contact information for three confidential references. Applications received by October 15, 2024, will receive full consideration, and review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Professor David E. Hansen, chair of the Department of Chemistry, at dehansen@amherst.edu.
