Job Summary:

Job Duties:

The Department of Chemistry at Bucknell University invites applications for a tenure‐track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in organic chemistry to begin August 1, 2025. The successful candidate will regularly teach organic chemistry lectures and labs, occasionally teach biochemistry lectures and/or labs, and have the opportunity to contribute to other courses depending on background and interests. We seek someone with the potential to be an outstanding teacher, scholar, advisor, and advocate for the advancement of diversity efforts within the sciences. Development of a strong research program in organic chemistry is required and research interests with a biological emphasis are preferred. The research area should complement but not duplicate current research within the department.

The minimum qualification is a Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field.

Outstanding candidates in the final stages of their dissertation may be considered but must complete their degree in their first year at Bucknell in order to continue employment after the first year. Postdoctoral experience is preferred; candidates with professional experience outside academia are also welcome.

New faculty at Bucknell University have opportunities for professional development at the department level as well as through programming offered by our Teaching and Learning Center. We seek candidates who are committed to creating a climate that fosters the growth and development of a diverse student body and encourage applications from members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education.

The Bucknell Department of Chemistry provides a flexible curriculum that explores the breadth and depth of chemical studies and supports the professional aspirations of our students. The department offers BA, BS, and MS degrees in chemistry, a BS degree in cell biology/biochemistry, and provides courses that support pre-health, engineering, and non-major students. The department believes in a pedagogy of active learning across the curriculum and values smaller class and lab sizes. Chemistry students gain hands-on experience with a wide range of advanced instrumentation in their coursework and by choosing to participate in cutting-edge chemical research in close collaboration with a faculty mentor. The department actively contributes to the chemistry profession and is engaged with community STEM outreach. Please see ww.bucknell.edu/chemistry for more information.

This is a full-time, tenure-track, benefits-eligible, exempt faculty position. Bucknell offers a competitive wage and comprehensive benefits plan.

We ask that candidates do not use generative AI in preparing their application materials, which must include:

• cover letter
• curriculum vitae
• research statement (4-6 pages)
• teaching statement (2-3 pages)
• contact information for three confidential references (not requested at time of application, but later as part of the review process)

Your application materials should clearly establish your interest in working at a primarily undergraduate liberal arts institution. The research statement should describe your early research goals and include a plan for involving undergraduate students. The teaching statement should describe your areas of interest, past experiences, commitment to undergraduate education, and ideas or philosophy for equitable and inclusive teaching.

Questions about the position may be directed to Prof. Karen Castle mailto:(kcastle@bucknell.edu), Chair of the Department of Chemistry.

Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.
