FACULTY POSITION - OPEN RANK
UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS URBANA-CHAMPAIGN
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applicants for one full-time tenure-track faculty position in the broad field of materials science and engineering, with emphasis on one or more of the following areas: bio- or soft materials; energy and sustainability; quantum materials; high throughput experimentation supported by data science. Candidates from under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Faculty members in the department are expected to initiate and sustain a vigorous research program. The search will focus on candidates at the Assistant Professor rank, however, outstanding candidates at the Associate or Full Professor rank will also be considered.

At the time of appointment, applicants must hold an earned doctorate in an appropriate field. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications. The typical salary range is as follows: $120,000 to $135,000 at the Assistant Professor level, $135,000 to $156,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $156,000 to $200,000 at the Full Professor level, for a 9-month service basis.
The expected start date is August 16, 2025, but this is negotiable. To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by November 25, 2024. Early applications are strongly encouraged, and interviews may take place during the application period, but a hiring decision will not be made until after the closing date.
MatSE at Illinois has a long tradition of excellence in materials research, teaching, and service. The department currently has 28 core faculty and approximately 260 undergraduate and 220 graduate students, with highly ranked graduate and undergraduate programs. Extensive state-of-the-art characterization and nanofabrication facilities are housed on campus in the Materials Research Laboratory, the Holonyak Micro & Nanotechnology Lab, the Beckman Institute, and the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. The campus also hosts exceptional computational facilities, such as the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
