Job Description:

The Chemistry Department at Goucher College invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Chemistry. This is a tenure track faculty position starting in August of 2025. The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in physical chemistry. The standard teaching load is 10 contact hours per semester and will include physical chemistry and introductory general chemistry courses. The two-semester physical chemistry sequence consists of biophysical chemistry with lab and quantum chemistry and spectroscopy with lab. Additional teaching possibilities could include an upper-level seminar in chemistry, science-based contributions to the Goucher Commons general education curriculum, or courses in our nationally recognized post-baccalaureate premedical program. Scholarly research required by this position must further the education of our undergraduates as well as be appropriate for a small liberal arts college. Candidates must have a clearly articulated research program in physical chemistry that emphasizes undergraduate research opportunities.

The Chemistry Department strives to provide broad training for our students to prepare them for a variety of goals, including graduate and professional degrees as well as a variety of careers including teaching, non-profit work, research, health professions, and others. We recently redesigned our introductory chemistry courses to employ promising pedagogical practices shown to engage and retain students, particularly students who identify as first-generation and those from backgrounds that have been historically excluded from the sciences. These redesigns include specifications grading and utilizing the studio model of integrated lecture and lab. The Chemistry Major at Goucher College is accredited by the American Chemical Society. We have a robust internally funded summer research program that supports mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students in our research labs. Goucher College endeavors to be a model teaching and learning community where faculty and students are engaged with one another in learning both inside and outside of the traditional classroom. Application materials should clearly articulate the candidate's interest in teaching at a small liberal arts institution and commitment to the use of engaged pedagogies that support equity and success for students from diverse backgrounds.

Ongoing scholarly research, student advising, and service to the College are expected.

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. by the start date of August 2025.

Preferred qualifications:

Postdoctoral work and teaching experience and/or professional development activities related to teaching are preferred. 

Salary Range:

$63,000-66,990
