Job Details

The John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University seeks applicants for a position at the tenure-track rank in the area of materials science and engineering, with an expected start date of July 1, 2025.

We seek candidates interested in the understanding and control of fundamental properties of materials and accelerating the design and implementation of next-generation materials systems, using approaches that may include computation and theory, synthesis, characterization, data science and automation.

Materials research at Harvard is highly interdisciplinary and diverse, spanning themes that include energy and climate, quantum materials and/or devices, and soft matter. Within SEAS, it is centered in the areas of Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering, and Applied Physics. It has strong links to Bioengineering, Applied Mathematics, and Applied Computation, as well as to the FAS Departments of Physics, and Chemistry and Chemical Biology. With this position, we aim to strengthen and leverage these links, as well as research activities in the Harvard Data Science Initiative, Harvard Quantum Initiative, and the Kempner Institute.

SEAS celebrates the multiple dimensions of diversity that each member of our community offers, including diversity of background, perspective, and lived experience.

Basic Qualifications:  A doctorate degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics / Applied Physics, Chemistry, Applied Mathematics or a related field is required by the expected start date.

Additional Qualifications:  We are seeking candidates who have a record of innovative computational work, a vision for an original research program, and an interest in collaborating across multiple theoretical and experimental disciplines at Harvard University. Candidates should have a strong commitment to advising and enthusiasm for teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in their own and related fields.

Special Instructions: Please submit the following materials through the ARIeS portal (https://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/14147). Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit all their materials by November 15, 2024 and to request referees to submit letters by December 8, 2024. Late applications will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled.

  1. Cover letter
  2. Curriculum Vitae including a complete list of publications.
  3. Teaching/advising statement (describing the candidate’s teaching philosophy and practices as well as their approach to creating a learning environment in which students are encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas)
  4. Research statement
  5. Service statement describing efforts to strengthen academic communities, e.g., the candidate’s department, institution, and/or professional societies.
  6. Names and contact information of a minimum of 3 and up to 5 referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received. At least one letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate’s undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral advisor.
  7. A minimum of one and up to three representative publications.
